To return or not to return??? Optorite + Hassle vs Plextor quality

A few days ago I bought an Optorite 40x12x40 for (get this) $38!!! ($45 after shipping) However, after reading so many posts on this site about the glories of Plextor, I went hunting and found a Plextor PlexWriter 24x10x40A for $70 (76 with shipping).

Would you go through the hassle of returning the cheapo even though there is a ridiculous $10 "processing fee" and get the obviously better PlexWriter, or just hope for the best? Is it worth the hassle? Has anyone had good/bad results with an Optorite burner?

BTW, I'm a poor college student on a shoestring budget...any advice???

...I mean advice on the burner situation, not on being a poor college student-I know I'm basically screwed on that one!

Between the two, IF it was me, I'd go for the Plexy.

    If it was me.

Only b/c I've never heard of the other company in the computer world.

Optorite drives have never given me any trouble, are cheap, stable, reliable, fast, have a broad range of media compatibility and pretty good burn quality. I don't think the Plextor is worth the additional money.
BUT, the Optorite doesn't do SD2 copying (the plextor does it with AWS.), but if you dont plan in backing up 1:1 protected games, the Optorite is more than worth it.

    Thanks Raceman and fallen.

I'm (plesantly) suprised to hear that Optorites are reliable, when I can't find a single review
on their burners! Is there any reason reviewers ignore these products?

BTW, on the Optorite box it boasts "Support Clone CD (back up real 1:1 copy)." Doesn't that mean I could back up games, too?

The optorite is an excellent burner its very well built and uses high quality components. The plextor is also a good burner but it is an ugly looking one the optorite is the best looking one i ever seen. But looks arnt everything Performance is what the optorite has its an excellent cd rom,it extracts cdda at 40x,It will read anything and does it fast. I like the cd play button on front . It will play audio without windows or any software. Its the best bang for the buck....Keep the optorite and save your money...:)

cd-rw.org: It's made by Optorite itself, using an Oak chipset. Their burners are pretty good quality, and I think of them as well as I think of Cyberdrive: Great burners, reliable, resistant, optimized for cheap media, nice speeds, and cheap, but don't do SD2.

Edit: They're not reviewed because they're a new brand in the western world, I believe. Or because an Optorite review doesn't attract attention, who knows.

Hi, can anybody tell me what is SD2, and why is good that it does not do SD2. I am looking for a new burner too, and I dont know if SONY is better.

SD2 refers to SafeDisc v2.x copy protection mechanism, that some drives & software can handle and some don't. Used on many game titles.
