I've been modding for 8 yrs now, I've hard modded a couple thousand Playstations/Playstation2 and I'm currently working on XBOX #173 but rather then chip it i wanted to try this soft modding for myself so as to maybe not be so pushing for people to just chip it and be done with it :)

i was given a FUBAR v1.4, the kid had dropped the box so he said. the harddrive wouldn't spin up so i popped my X3ce into the box, pulled the EEPROM and setup a new harddrive, fixed the broken DVD drive and now I've got a practically unmodded back to spec console.

here is where the soft modding comes into play..........i want to soft mod it BEFORE i pull the chip out that way i don't have to hot swap this or that or hook anything to the PC other then an Ethernet cable. i do NOT own a action replay or any memory device and i do not own any of the exploitable games.

enlighten me, what files have to be put where to get another default dashboard (without a chip in there?? I'd rather run XBMC as default like i set up the boxes i chip if that'll work but EvoX/Avalaunch if necessary.

I've read and read and best answer I've found is to use the AIDeluxe 3.1 disc and let the chip boot it and then install the mod but with much reading this sounds to only work with a chipped console and won't work once the chip is pulled back out.

    thanks in advance

Teh hotswap method is very comlicated and very unifficient it can lead to problems like not properly installing your MS backup or eeprom...

As for the memory card and the game its way easier and much more safe...A memory unit or AR is about $20 and the games are about $1-8..

you didn't read the question so it seams, i want to install the mod with the chip, then pull the chip out and have a softmodded console. does anyone have a C/E copy of a softmoded to download so i can FTP those to the box, then lock the drive and pull the chip out.

if i wanted to blow 30 bucks on an AR and the original game, i'd just get another chip for it.

Actually, AID is meant as a supplement to softmod installations (SID in particular), so you're on the right track. The cause for confusion may be that AID will only run on a modded Xbox since it boots from a DVD-R. Once you use it though, the Xbox will have a fully functional soft mod that can be used once you pull the chip out.

As I recall, AID is capable of installing XBMC as the default dash, although it won't be the latest version. Simple enough to upgrade though, as it should be the same process as a hard mod.

It also comes with a handy PDF should you want to read up on it prior to use.

    @PAN5Y

you seam to do a huge amount of post padding, tell me you're not one of those people who tries for 'AD Addict' status at the expense of not knowing what you're talking about.

my apologies PAN5Y, you were only trying to help and I'm gracious that you did. FYI the AIDeluxe worked like a dream, installed the soft mod then installed XBMC as default dash and pulled the chip, boots to XBMC without a disc in and boots a disc with one in.

    thanks guys

    Hey guys!!!

Softmodding is easy if you set yourself up in the correct way first!

You'll need a memory card, a modded Xbox (Which you have) and Splinter Cell (Just buy a cheap secondhand one). Download SID 4.5 and then FTP into the modded console. Insert your blank memory card and it will pop up as i:\ or similar. FTP the SID files for Splinter Cell. Done, no need for an AR!!!

Start your unmodded console to the MSDASH, check which version of the dash you have by going into settings, if you have 5960, you don't need to change it! If you don't have 5960 i'll explain how to easily change that in a minute!

    1) Ok, in your MSDASH go to your Memory section, delete any Splinter Cell games that may be on the HDD and then copy across the SID4 file and the Splinter Cell gamesave. Insert Splinter Cell, Start, Load and then load Linux, then checkpoints! You should now be in the SID front page.

2)If you don't need to update your dash, skip to 3. If you need to update your dash, firstly save the eeprom, go back to the front page again and go to SID4 settings, modify the network settings to match your FTP IP address that you use, scroll down, save settings, return to front screen, scroll down and reboot. It will just reset UnleashX, not the Xbox! You should now be able to FTP the Xbox. Save your eeprom (E:\Udata\215*****\backup\) to your PC, delete the entire of C:\ and then FTP back a complete, clean 5960 dash to C:\.
There's no need to reboot, disconnect the FTP.

3)Click the following in order, Backup EEPROM (Not needed if you are following from Step 2), Backup MS Dash, it will backup the new 5960, scroll back down and "Install SoftMod". You'll want NDure Open=Retail and obviously whatever region you need! All requirements will now pass as you have 5960.

    4) Let it finish and it will display a screen telling you it needs to reboot to finish the Mod, but you must remove the disc! Scroll down, power off the xbox, power back on with the eject button, remove the disc ASAP and then power it off again ASAP. Now power on with the small power button, it will show UnleashX and say some crap on the screen, press "A" and let it load.

    5) There is no Step 5, you now have a Softmodded Xbox!
