When I bought my Toshiba laptop it could burn dvd-rs. Now it can't. Here are somethings that may have caused this: I reset my computer to factory settings and I installed SP2 for XP.

Also, the first time I tried burning a dvd-r after these events, I used a 4x Maxwell DVD-R. On the back of its case it says that if it is used in a DVD drive that is only 2x or 1x it could basically screw up the drive. I read that afterwards.

I'm not sure if any of the above are causing the DVD-ROMs screwedness but I guess they are possibilities. As for the problem itself...at first I couldn't get Nero 6.3.1.25 Ultra Edition, or any other burning program, to recognize that a blank DVD is in the drive. After many hours of searching forums and googling many queries, I found a firmware patch which helped a bit. I used to have F/W 1330 and now I have x334. After doing that I could occasionally get the computer to realize that there is a blank dvd in the drive. I had a petter success rate with Verbatim 2x DVD-Rs. But when that part turns out successful and I try burning some data in UDF format onto the DVD-R, the burn process fails before it really gets a chance to start. I'm not sure if a single bit gets tranfered before the failure.

I have one of the more informative log entries here:

So...It would be great if someone knew what I should do. I know from searching around forum for hours that a lot of people are having problems with the particular drive that I have and I'm quite confident that there is no solution that wouldn't involve me losing the data that I want to transfer to DVDs. But please...I'm a noob and I don't know what I'm talking about. So give me your best shot. Need any more info? Ask and I'll try my best to inform you.

    Thanks,
    Stryphe

One of the biggest problems many members are having is with SP 2. It is causing so many problems its hard to keep track of them. If you can restore your system to remove SP 2 I would do that first. SP 2 is suppose to increase security issues, but causes tons of other problems. Some get it installed Ok, others have had their complete system crash from it. It will be a long time before I think about installing it.

I've had two technicians look at my Toshiba SD-R6012 Burner .. the first failed to get it working and the second said" That was an early burner. Forget about it." Which I will I guess.
