On some Toshiba Satelite models, the sound device is located on the Front Panel board inside the laptop. This means that if someone took the laptop appart, they could have possibly failed to hook up one of the two connectors to the front panel board, disabling either sound or the front panel lights.

If your lights are working, but Device Manager isn't finding any sort of sound device, then this might be your problem.

If you're not experienced with taking apart and reassembling laptops, you may want to take it by a computer shop and ask them if they could kinkly check your front panel connections. If they report back that your model of laptop doesn't have a front panel or that the connection is snug, then you've ruled out that possibility (unless one of the ribbon cables connecting the front panel is burned out, at which point a connection can be snug but not complete the circut).

If nothing else, this gives you a starting point.

If you do all of this and still get nothing, perhaps you're approaching this driver issue the wrong way. You say you've reinstalled the drivers, assumedly the standard AC97 drivers. Did you get the drivers directly from Toshiba's website? Are you downloading the drivers specific to your Laptops Model Number and Version?
