transfer game to internal HD?

The ps3 external can only read from fat32 with no larger files than 4gb yes, but ps3 game files are cut up into hundreds of separate files for example "Resident Evil 5 [PAL][PS3" is cut into 899 files. what you need to do is:
    1. Create directory “Gamez” in your external hard disk
    2. Copy the extracted content from the release to this DIR
    3. Have fun!

one question I hope someone can answer please is how can I transfer the game on the external to the internal as I would prefer to use the internal as load time is much quicker?

I think you have to unzip the files with winrar! then the files will become one file (iso file)

Certain games do have files that are larger than 4gb(most don't, but there are a few), until someone figures out a way to get ps3 to recognize an external drive with a file system that supports larger files you won't be able to backup or run from an external drive. There is an program written for the ps3(ps3 ftp server) that will allow you to "transfer" files directly to/from your ps3, but its still in its early development stages and tends to crash a lot. As long as you have an internal drive with the space you require, this will allow you to move backups to/from your ps3 without running into the limitations of fat32.

cant you hook the internal hdd up to a pc with a 2.5" SATA enclosure and transfer that way? or will the pc not detect the drive?

Well, the drive itself will attach to the same internal cables as a 3.5" sata drive, but you won't be able to read anything on the drives. I believe they run a proprietary version of linux, windows won't recognize the file system. If it was that easy someone would have figured out a way to copy games a long time ago(or at least the downloaded games/content).

OK guys I found out how to do it but I don't have time to locate or type up instructions but to make things short. You need to use the ftp server homebrew pkg to allow you to transfer games from you computers hard to your ps3's internal hard drive.

    Update:
Found a tutorial here you go guys.

Place the PS3-FTP-Server.pkg on an external
Turn on your PS3 with the dongle in, using whichever way you normally use depending on your PS3
When your PS3 starts up plug in the external
Make sure your PS3 is hooked up to the internet, wired or wireless(DO NOT UPDATE TO 3.2) You don't have to be signed into your profile you just want to make sure your PS3 has internet access
Now go to Install Packages under the games tab, Install PS3-FTP-Server
Once finished it will have it's own icon, like the Backup Manager, start up FTP Server App by clicking on it
Now you will be on the main page, at the top is the IP Address you will need and the Port, which will be 21.
Hit Start and now is the time to go to your PC
    Start up FileZilla
At the top is: Host, Username, Password, Port, Quickconnect

Host: (IP ADDRESS that is listed on the PS3-FTP-Server APP)
    Username: FTPD12345
    Password: (Leave Blank)
    Port: 21
    Then hit Quickconnect

It will now detect your PS3 (I had a couple errors when I first tried but just kept retrying until it got it, then it never gave me a problem after that)

The files are now listed on the right side, then one you want is "dev_hdd0" Double click it

    Themes go in: dev_hdd0/theme
Games go in: dev_hdd0/game/LAUN12345/GAMEZ (If you don't have a GAMEZ folder inside

LAUN12345, right click and create directory: GAMEZ)
Now you can put your games inside of there just drag and drop the one big folder inside of there.
At the bottom is Queued files, Failed transfers, Successful transfers
Make sure every file goes to the Succesful transfer section
If any go into Failed transfers right click on it and hit Reset to queue (bottom option)

If ever at the top it disconnects you or says Connection Failed, go to your PS3, hit Stop Server, then right after hit Start again, and it should restart the connection.
You can also try hitting Quickconnect again, and choose the Abort option(Bottom option)

Tip: Inside of Edit -> Settings -> Connection -> FTP, Change Passive to Active, just click it. After doing this I never have gotten another disconnect at all yet, and it seems to go a bit faster transferring

Hope you like the tut, I know it's not very pretty and long,

I can confirm that it works I grab a dump of my game backup that I made on my external and transferred it to the internal hard drive of the ps3, so yes it works. Boom.

Ok so I did everything according to the instructions and its working fine 100% so I can definitely confirm this. A few notes though: firstly this ftp program has many failed transfers so just like the tutorial says keep queuing and eventually they will get through. Secondly where it says "go in: dev_hdd0/theme" for me there was no "dev_hdd0/theme" only "dev_hdd0/game" so maybe this varies from console to console but either way it worked fine for me.

glad someone was able to find everything and write up a quick walkthrough/tutorial. Many thanks for this. Hoping to have my teensy++ psgroove in about a week *fingers crossed*. My luck they'll release the psp port the day after it arrives.

Well your outta luck there because the devs closed down the psp port project, I guess it was too hard for them to get done.

With files bigger than 4gb i use filespitter. Split into the gamez folder and then join and it works everytime.

Is there any other way to transfer the files? Something like you can hook up your external directly through USB and copy to the internal HDD? I just tried using the FTP server and everything was going fine and then I got alot of "Target file already exists". It gives me the option to overwrite and resume and bunch of others. Any suggestions?

I always get target file already exists dont wory about that. Just click overwrite and apply to all. Its just a glitch when copying, trust me overwriting is fine and the game will work fine.

Ok, So i finally get some success with this and then now im having trouble just moving files around. hahaha. of course. i get this error when i want to put a file into a different folder "502 Unimplemented or invalid command". For some reason the root folder is only showing in the explorer window. And there's no hierarchy. No Video....> Folder....> and so forth. Im so close! ahhaha. And another thing is everybody is posting 30 mb transfer's and the most im seeing are 1.3. WTF??? ahahah..
