ive got the trv50 and used to have the trv30. both are easy peasy to set up.

you need a firewire card (IEEE1394) first off. in my case, xp recognized the device perfectly and also comes with MS movie maker (very light weight, but stable app).

you can control the camcorder with the app through the firewire card. most apps have a 'record' option in addition to play/rwd/ffd.

I use Sonic Foundry Vegas Video 3c($$$), other apps that can easily handle this problem are Adobe Premier($$$$) and Ulead Movie Factory($). basically, any editing app has a feature where you can export video to the camera.

also, if you read your sony manual, it should have a section on iLink transfer (ilink is sony's idea of IEEE1394). The camcorder should have come with an MGI Studio CD also, though im not sure if that app can do this.
