Greetings. I recently switched over from Norton, to TrendMicro. I love it. I have a problem. When I'm browsing the internet, occasionally I get the message "the connection was reset". At first I thought maybe I was just having connection problems, but I know now that this is not the case. I tried exiting Trend Micro, and the problem stopped- internet connectivity returned to normal. This is no good, however, because I need to be running protection. If I know what the problem is, I'm sure I can fix it, but I'm pretty useless when it comes to actually figuring out what's wrong with computer stuff. I know from experience that Afterdawn can fix everything, so I figured I'd post. If anyone has had this happen, or knows how to fix it, please reply. Thanks in advance Pangy
wait a sec, your only protection against everything is trend micro????? This is not good! Not to say that Trend Micro is bad or anything but it is not enough. You should use two programs for internet surfing: Avast and Zone alarm. But I cant see why Trend Micro would cause a problem like this, so i suggest that you uninstall it and then re-install it again. This should help. The "connection was reset" problem sounds like your on a wireless network, are you? If so there isnt much you can do about it, but if not the problem seems to lie in Trend Micro's program. Get into Ternd Micro and open "help", from there try to find some e-mail address and contact them, then tell them your problem. Good luck mate
I'm not on a wireless network, unfortunately. (I only say this because if I was, it sounds like there'd be an easy fix.) I'll definitely contact TrendMicro and see if this is a known issue or something. I would have thought of that, except I've just been coming straight to AfterDawn for my computer problems, and I guess it's become a habit, hehe. I tried going into Run... > ipconfig, but the window opens and immediately disappears, it's strange. As for Avast and Zone Alarm, there was a thread on here about a month ago hosting a discussion on anti-virus programs. I was active in it, and I chose TrendMicro as a result. I've been using CCleaner and EasyCleaner as well (not real-time, and not for internet protection), because another user recommended them. I might look into those programs you mentioned additionally, but my main foxus is speed, as I do alot of gaming. I used to use Norton, and I've noticed a huge difference with TrendMicro regarding PC performance. The thought of having my PC run the way it did before is an intimidating one. :/ Thanks for the reply, it helped me.
be careful. I wouldn't risk security over speed! If your talking about gaming then maybe you should just shutdown the anti-virus stuff and leave ternd-micro open (that is if its an internet game like world of warcraft). What your discribing is weird... maybe you should try useing hijack this to see if it can find any problems with your computer.
Tred micros PC cilin is one of the better all in one AV/firewall packages you can get. Now what version of TM are you running I am usieng PC cillin 2006,I know enough about 2006 and 2005 to be helpful I think ^^
I'm running PC-cillin 2006, I just got it at the end of August, and I'm loving it so far. I'm not -entirely- sure that the problem I have is related to TM, though when I shut it down my connection did improve. I haven't had my connection 'reset' on me in like four days, and I'm not 100% sure what caused it to begin with. :/
PC cillin firewall is not the simplest of things,I had mine once running with zone alarm and that killed the net now and then, did you fully installed Norton? Have you made sure SP2's firewall is off? What kind of net do you have? How long have you had SP2? every time I have tried SP2 I can see at least a 10% drop in my surfing speeds when I was on cable net,but if you have been useing SP2 for months thats not a problem also what program are you havening the most trouble with sometimes you have to go into the firewall part of PC cilin and set it to allow all ports on all adders for a single program,I have to set it up for Trillaim my IM program and for any bit torrent program I use so it dose not prevent it from fully functioning. When PC cilin nulls the net for everything 3 things could be happening 1.software incompatibility with another program usealy AV or firewall 2.pc cillin is corrupt and needs to be reinstalled 3.Heavy net attack (unlkely unless you have a hacker after you) 4. PC cillin is setup to stop the net when it detects a virus 3 and 4 are less likely so it could be 1 or 2,do you have any other firewall or virus programs running?
I didn't understand most of what you said, I'm pretty clueless with this stuff ><; TM is my only antivirus software right now. When I say I used to be on Norton, I mean I was on Norton until I completely reinstalled Windows after formatting everything, so my machine right now has never had Norton on it. You said something about bit torrent. I don't know if this discussion is allowed here, I'm guessing not...I'll say that I use a torrent program, and I DO experience slow downs and connection trouble while running it. Is this a known issue? I went into my TM firewall settings and everything internet-related that I use is allowed to connect with all ports. My Windows Firewall is off, also, if that helps. I'm on high speed, right now I'm around 9000 kbps Down, and 880 up. I wish I could tell you more, I'm kinda struggling through, I sppreciate the help though. I'm trying to learn about this stuff so I can help myself in the future hehe ._. I will say that for three or four days now, my connection's been pretty decent. I didn't change anything, so it's kind of weird that it's suddenly working...still, if you've got more ideas I'd love to hear them. If the problem comes back I wanna chop it up and spit on it. ^_^
we can talk about BT and how BT works and trying to make it go faster linking to "gray aera" stuff is always looked down apon, legit links to legit shareware/freeware and websites are fine tho. I also believe that you can post BT links to non copy right threating stuff I like using BT for large demos and game preview videos because it resumes flawlessly. Ok so you have a FRESH install of SP2? trying to use torrents for speed testing is like trying to find the cracker jack prize in a 100LB box. but before we can mess with BT lets focus on what you are running you have XP SP2 freshly installed running DSL/CABLE 900KBS Do you have the PC pluged into the DSL/cable modem or thru a router? Windose firewall is off only firewall/AV programs that are installed since the fresh install is TM? Did you have any trouble installing TM? Do you update TM whenever it wants to update? this really sounds like a random bug/glitch if it pops back up best to un/reisntal it and hope it dose not come back. Heres how to customize the frewall to a program(I really wish you could customize the settings for a program in both in and out going when you frist run a program and have to ok it by Tms pop up window) Double click on the TM icon Network security Personal Firewall Edit(double click) Direct connection(default for most users) Exceptions You have to ADD 2 one for incomeing and 1 for outgoing ADD Specified App (C:\XXX\XXX\XXX.exe) Action allow:CHECK OUTGOING:CHECK Protocol: UDP/TCP ALL ports:check Ip setigns:leave alone ADD Specified App (Same as above) Action allow:CHECK INCOMEING:CHECK Protocol: UDP/TCP ALL ports:check Ip setigns:leave alone Doing this will force TM firewall to let the program be and let it have ful accsess to the net best used for games that dont want to work,IMs and BTC(Bit torrent clients)
I installed SP2 about forty days ago now, I guess. I tested my speed using "Cogeco High Speed Test". It's my ISP, and the link is eays to google. My PC is connected to a router. Windows Firewall is off. I had no trouble installing TM, and it updates itself like two or three times a day, I think (it only takes a couple seconds, so it's no hassle.) TM is the only firewall and/or AV program installed since my restart. If the problem returns, I'll try a reinstall. Until then, thank you very much for the detail and patience, that's the kind of post that I remember, and it's much appreciated. -Pangy
