I've used DVD shrink on several DVDs and the compression is usually between 50%-70%. I use Imitation DVD-R discs. When I play them on my regular TV with a DVD player I bought about 2 years ago, they play perfectly. But I recently tried them on my big screen with a RCA DVD player I bought about 5 years ago, and the quality was awful. The picture was clear, but they skipped and froze and were just bad in general. Commercial DVDs work fine, but the burned DVDs have major problems on my RCA player. I even burned MPEG video files with Nero to a DVD-R disc and they played perfectly on the RCA. But with DVD shrink, they can't play more than a minute with skipping huge chunks of the movie. I was just wondering if anyone knows the cause of the problem? Does the TV size make a difference? Could the RCA DVD player be too old to properly play the discs burned with DVD Shrink?
What's the best media? That kind of sucks since I bought about 30 Imitation DVDs. But atleast I can learn from my mistakes. Also, whis there any difference in quality between DVD-R and DVD+R? Because the big screen with the RCA DVD player also cannot play DVD+R for some reason.
You can possibly booktype the +r media so it works with your player. Do a search for it because that is not my specialty. If you can buy online and want -r then supermediastore I believe has the -r Taiyo Yuden(Very good stuff). If your stuck with -r and brick&mortar stores than I'd go with Office Depot brand.(Should be Riteks) The Sony and Fuji -rs get a little more iffy. They can be pretty good. The +R media is probably the most popular now but not neccesarily better per say.
Yes but I haven't used the Verbatim -R for a long time. The +R is considered top notch but I'm not faniliar with their -R. My guess would be that it is fine.
It could very easily be bad media, it actually probably is bad media ,but skips and freezes can also be attributed to too fast a burn speed, that together w/ bad media is a death sentence. Good media shouldn't have a problem w/ speeds up to 8x. With bad media try an keep it under 4x.
Do you have labels on the discs? Sometimes these cause issues as well. More than likely though it is bad media. If you shop the sales you can get quality media for less than the crap stuff. Stay away from Memorex.
If you're using the same disc in both the rca and other stand alone and the rca is the only one having playback issues,then sounds like that rca player is at fault. Try a laser lens cleaning on that rca since it is over 5 years old. The compression can also effect playback.Not so much in the smaller tv,but that big screen tv will show the effects of high compression. Do you use dvd shrinks quality enhancements like slow adaptive error compensation? Try using quality media,keep burn at 4x max,and keep compression to a minimum.Try the max smoothness or max sharpness enhancement.
Yeah, I agree with the rest of the guys and i'm willing to bet that it's a media issue. My favorite brands are Maxell, Ritek, Verbatim, and Taiyo-Yuden, you can't go wrong with any of these brands.
see here for some reasons on why not to buy Imation - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/232406
Bad news creaky,staples imation sale is for 2 weeks!Look for those burn logs and imation threads from this 2 week sale UGGH! Imation sale at staple's =$25 for 100 crap-mags. Office depot+8x-50 pack ritek-r03 and 50 pack maxell-002-00=$25 at last weeks OD sale! Which one of those to choose?very difficult to choose aye? They only had 1 ritek spindle left in +8x speed and the free spindle had to be same as first spindle so they threw in a 50 pack spindle of hitachi maxell +8x for my free tub! I love bargains.
@saugmon I've gotten the OD brand that you suggested and they have worked great, no coasters, [bold]that were not my fault.[/bold] I did inadvertantly burn 5 that ended up coasters because CloneDVD chose the Directors cut & commentary instead of the main movie title on Alien VS Predator. It was like 2mb's bigger than the main movie. Crap, I hate the directors comments! How can one know for sure which title is the one you want in cloneDVD? Any opinions?
I'm not familiar with clonedvd.Dvd shrink/nero/and anydvd make a heck of a combo for me.Then there's dvdfab decrypter express for those new sony releases. I have a success rate of 349 good out of 350 with the OD ritek-R03,the 1 bad coaster separated a few days after the burn.It looked like an LCD screen when you push the screen in with your finger and see the numbers get all globbed up.Vert hideous! Those 50 riteks are just waiting to be burned in my 1640!
@Saugmon Have you ever had the issue of choosing the main movie title when there are multiples, and knowing which one to choose? Would you just preview them in Shrink first? cheers.
On some of my better adult oriented dvds,I may have up to 8 main movies on 1 original disc. I use dl media on the better ones with all the juicy bonus features,LOL. Regular- R-rated or less, I use the view screen in dvd shrink. I shoot for the Full screen and no extra camera angles. RW media comes in handy here. You can pow around with that till you figure out which title to opt for. I had a similar issue with Passion of the Christ.Kept getting the narrating,until I decided to shrink entire disc and it turned out great. I'm a perv. My gf wanted a britney spears movie,so I got her Britney Rears! LOL
I can tell you it's the 5 year old RCA DVD player. Most 5 year old players can't handle DVD-R or DVD+R!
@saugmon - - that's ok, i think i should leave a fews logs for you lot then! Imation - [bold]Ugh[/bold]
