lite-on dvdrw ldw-851s is the name of the drive. Aso of recently it is not reading any cd, whether that be data, audio, etc. Additionally, I've tried to burn cd's in iTunes and that is not succesful either. When I insert a CD, nothing changes in the My Computer screen. I can hear the drive attempting to do something with the CD, and I can also see soem lights flashing on it, but to no avail. And just to be sure I tested a few of the discs on other computers, and they do work, so I know its just this computer's drive in particular. Any help much appreciated.
    thanks

also, when nothing is inserted into the drive and I open the drive in my computer, it allows me to do so, rather than saying "Please Insert CD" (or something like that). And I think I've found something else. From the discs I've test it seems as if it ONLY READS BURNED CD'S. So, I dont know how to put this, but it DOESNT READ MANUFACTURED (OR PRE-PROGRAMMED per se) DISCS. What does this mean?

    Hi joshto125,

The lite-on is at least 2 years old. Not sure how much use you've put it through, but there is a possibility it has met it's maker.

Nero InfoTool, as the last post suggests, is free. Try that and post back if not the case.

Perhaps, if a mod moved this to the PCHardware/DvdR Drives forum, you might get a response from someone with more information?

I THINK THIS IS THE MAIN EVIDENCE OF SOMETHING HERE BUT I DONT KNOW WHAT IT MEANS ABOUT ONLY READING BURNED DISCS

I GOT THE NERO INFO LOG WHAT INFO COULD YOU USE FROM THAT?

    joshto125,

Post your log in the Nero discussion forum. There are some extremely informed people there who know how to read the logs and can perhaps can pinpoint your problem.

    Post here:

    @jostto125,

Sorry I didn't read your post correctly. "Run Nero Info Tool . If it does not correctly identify the drive and its capabilities, then there's cause for suspicion that your burner is bad."

I have looked and looked over other forums asking the same question as yours, all with no answers other than to clean the laser, the laser is out of alignment, or the burner is dead.

As it was working before you tried to burn cd's in ITunes, (I'm assuming you have a PC not a Mac) can you do a system restore to when it was working? Sorry, I don't know anything about Itunes. Could this have something to do with your problem?

Viruses, spyware, malware, software like InCD, InterActual Player, PCFriendly, can do weird things to your computer. Run your antivirus. Some good programs to have are LavaSoft Adaware Se, Spybot Search and Destroy, CCleaner. These are free programs. You can find them here:

Sorry out of ideas, and will be only on AD sporatically in the following days. I will get a mod to move this to a different forum.

    Good Luck

Personally I have only cleaned lasers with easy access, ie. cd players and game systems. I used 99% Isopropyl Alcohol. Pour some of the IPA into the lid, dip the end of a Q-Tip and shake off excess, GENTLY clean the lens. Repeat with other end of Q-Tip. Here's some info for you:

You can get laser cleaning discs with brushes. The techs at our local repair shop do not recommend them, say all the disc do is move the grime around. They use the ISA and Q-Tip method.
