Rescently, I've been trying to burn DVDs, but it gives me the "Illegal disc" error. CDs burn fine, and for DVDs I'm using media that has worked fine for me in the past. I think it might be the firmware?? If so, can anyone point me in a direction to get more updated firmware? here's the log...thanks: Windows XP 5.1 IA32 WinAspi: - ahead WinASPI: File 'C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero\Wnaspi32.dll': Ver=2.0.1.59, size=160016 bytes, created 12/16/2003 8:18:06 PM Nero version: 6.3.1.17 Recorder: <_NEC DVD_RW ND-2500A> Version: 1.06 - HA 1 TA 0 - 6.3.1.17 Adapter driver: <atapi> HA 1 Drive buffer : 2048kB Bus Type : default (0) -> ATAPI, detected: ATAPI CD-ROM: <_NEC DVD_RW ND-2500A >Version: 1.06 - HA 1 TA 0 - 6.3.1.17 Adapter driver: <atapi> HA 1 === Scsi-Device-Map === DiskPeripheral : WDC WD1200JB-00EVA0 atapi Port 0 ID 0 DMA: On DiskPeripheral : ST320413A atapi Port 0 ID 1 DMA: On CdRomPeripheral : _NEC DVD_RW ND-2500A atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: On CdRomPeripheral : SCSIVAX DVD/CD-ROM 2.7a vaxscsi Port 2 ID 0 DMA: Off === CDRom-Device-Map === _NEC DVD_RW ND-2500A E: CDRom0 SCSIVAX DVD/CD-ROM F: CDRom1 ======================= AutoRun : 1 Excluded drive IDs: WriteBufferSize: 70254592 (0) Byte ShowDrvBufStat : 0 BUFE : 0 Physical memory : 479MB (490992kB) Free physical memory: 187MB (192112kB) Memory in use : 60 % Uncached PFiles: 0x0 Use Static Write Speed Table: 0 Use Inquiry : 1 Global Bus Type: default (0) Check supported media : Disabled (0) 25.9.2006 UDF/ISO compilation 10:42:37 PM #1 Phase 112 File dlgbrnst.cpp, Line 1845 DVD-Video files reallocation started 10:42:37 PM #2 Phase 114 File dlgbrnst.cpp, Line 1845 DVD-Video files reallocation completed (no file modified) 10:42:37 PM #3 Text 0 File Isodoc.cpp, Line 6065 Iso document burn settings ------------------------------------------ Determine maximum speed : FALSE Simulate : FALSE Write : TRUE Finalize CD : TRUE Multisession : FALSE Burning mode : DAO Mode : 1 ISO Level : 1 (Max. of 11 = 8 + 3 char) Character set : ISO 9660 Joliet :FALSE Allow pathdepth more than 8 directories : TRUE Allow more than 255 characters in path : TRUE Write ISO9660 ;1 file extensions : TRUE 10:42:37 PM #4 Phase 111 File dlgbrnst.cpp, Line 1845 DVD-Video files sorted 10:42:37 PM #5 Text 0 File Reader.cpp, Line 118 Reader running 10:42:37 PM #6 ISO9660GEN -11 File geniso.cpp, Line 3899 First writeable address = 0 (0x00000000) 10:42:37 PM #7 ISO9660GEN -11 File geniso.cpp, Line 3899 First writeable address = 0 (0x00000000) 10:42:37 PM #8 Text 0 File Burncd.cpp, Line 3172 Turn on Disc-at-once, using DVD media 10:43:20 PM #9 SCSI -1033 File Cdrdrv.cpp, Line 1188 SCSI Exec, HA 1, TA 0, LUN 0 Status: 0x04 (0x01, SCSI_ERR) HA-Status 0x00 (0x00, OK) TA-Status 0x02 (0x01, SCSI_TASTATUS_CHKCOND) Sense Key: 0x02 (KEY_NOT_READY) Sense Code: 0x04 Sense Qual: 0x01 CDB Data: 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 Sense Data: 0x70 0x00 0x02 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x0A 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x04 0x01 10:43:35 PM #10 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 245 Last possible write address on media: 2298495 (510:46.45, 4489MB) Last address to be written: 1427519 (317:13.44, 2788MB) 10:43:35 PM #11 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 257 Write in overburning mode: NO (enabled: CD) 10:43:35 PM #12 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 2137 Recorder: _NEC DVD_RW ND-2500A, Media type: DVD-R Disc Manufacturer: Prodis - cF02 Disc Application Code: 64, Disc Physical Code: 193 10:43:35 PM #13 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 418 >>> Protocol of DlgWaitCD activities: <<< ========================================= Insert empty disc to write to. Hi gDuBxxx Welcome to aD Yes your drive could use a firmware update - hopefully this will help with the media you are using (fuji 16x maybe?). Usually the cause of illegal disc error - older firmware w/ newer media. The latest is 1.0A from 3/2005. http://www.de.nec.de/softwareoverview2.php/id/1333 If it doesn't - try and find some 8x media for this drive - made in japan only Sony, Fuji or Maxell. If you can't then go for the 16x Verbatim. Nero can use an update too - update to 6.6.0.18. Here' some links: Package 1 http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe Package 2 (recode & vision) http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe Give that a go and let us know how it goes!
This is an old version of Nero, try for an update here, both packages http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe Package 2 http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe Update firmware to 1.0A from here http://support.necsam.com/oem/downloads/flashfirmware/dl/K250GNA0.exe These are poor quality discs, try Verbatim or Sony (made in japan) @binkie7, [bold]Damm you're fast[/bold]
Just wanted to say thanks x123412345. I updated everything, and it's all running perfectly now. So, aren't all media made the same way? What makes some better than others aside from the fact that it was made in Japan?
Glad to hear the updates did the trick. Nope not all media is made the same. Different dyes, dye application, quality control process etc all play into media. For DVD's made in Japan Sony or Fuji are usually made by Taiyo Yuden - Sony sometimes are made by Sony themselves. Maxell mij is made by Maxell. Verbatim are made by MCC (made in taiwan & the exception). All use azo dye which is the best and most compatible with drives. The made in japan just helps you narrow down who the actual manfacturer is to know what your getting.
Oh, I see. Perhaps I'll do some more research on this cause it sonds interesting. I appreciate everyone's help...
