    Hi all,

    I apologize for having my first post immediately being a cry for help ;-(

    I'm trying to backup my navigation DVD (from my Pioneer Avic 600T). I've created an image using dvddecrypter, and am trying to burn that one with Nero 7.2.3.2. (after dvddecrypter failed with a very cryptic message).

    It stops before writing the second layer, according to the log. I'm using Imation DVD +R DL (expensive stuff ;-( Sofar I've lost 3 out of 5 DVDs ), on a brandnew Philips DVDR1660/00M (firmware patched to the official P1.5). Could anybody who understands all the info in the log perhaps check it and tell me if that indicates a clue?

    Thanks very much in advance ;-))

    Mike

    PS/1 The log shows booktype change to DVD-Rom; that seems to be necessary I read in another thread.

    PS/2 I also burned a single layer DVD +R with the brand new Philips burner (to backup the navigation DVD of the build in navi-sys in my second car), and that worked 100%.

    Hi mfsa
    Not too much wrong with the log except the this error writing to the 2nd layer KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR and this one writing to the 1st layer KEY_ILLEGAL_REQUEST usually media related.

    The other thing is this discs are not fully recognized by your drive.
    It's only lists them as Media type: DVD+R9 Double Layer
    Usually the manfacturer info is here too.

    I don't think this is a Nero issue - more a media issue with the dual layer. DVD Decrypter which is one of the least problematic burners also gives you an error.

    So try one more burn program and take the speed down to 2x.
    It's by the same developer as dvd decrypter - imgburn (free).
    http://imgburn.com

    If that fails too then you'll need to pick up some Verbatim dual layer media - the best. They also were the ones to start manufacturing daul layer and have it perfected more so than Imation's you are using which is newer to this market.
    Unfortunately they can be costly - so stick with the good stuff.

    Try these suggestions and let us know how it goes - good, bad or otherwise.

    Hi Binkie ;-)

    Thanks a lot for responding so fast ;-)

    I will try as you wrote, and feed back here. My heart says it'll be a little fight at the store to get my money back for the lost DVDs and next buy the Verbatim, but I'll first try the successor of dvddecrypter.

    I'll be back ;-)

    Can't hurt to try and exchange them mfsa if imgburn fails.
    I'd try - don't where you're located - but stores like Besy Buy and such usually will.
    Dual Layers coasters is a little to rich for me :)

    It didn't work ;-(

    This is the log, with 2 warnings immediately at the beginning of the burn; do they indicate bad media?

    Thanks in advance ;-)

    @mfsa
    You can try an early version of Nero as Gwen said but I don't think that will help.
    You have been able to burn single layer dvd's - it's the dual layer that's giving you a problem.
    You've also used 3 programs - 2 of which are not as problematic as Nero can be.
    Also from the logs you've shown the failure is in writing to the 2nd layer which still can lead to the media you are using.

    Your best bet imho is to switch to the Verbatim - they have a good proven track record with dual layer media.

    Keep us posted!

    Hi all,

    Back again. I've now tried a Verbatim DVD+R 8.5GB. Burned it on 2x speed. It's past the last error, but now there's a new one during the verification process ;-( After the error, although the write is reported to be successfull, I can't read the disk from explorer (says I need to put in a readable disk). Based on this, I'm not putting the disk in my navigation system; it was a very expensive system, and I am afraid to blow it up ;-(

    Also, there is still the warning early on in the process, just as it used to be with the previous burns.

    I was thinking about dvddecrypter originally ripped the disk wrong? But then again, I can extract the *.iso perfectly; there are no CRC-errors or whatsoever. Or might I have had one of the decrypting-settings wrong? If so, which one? If I need to rip it again, would I need to use another program to rip it, instead of dvddecrypter?

    I've read in another forum the burner being on slave might also be a problem? (I know how to change the switch from slave to master, but I have no idea of which it is the slave; of the DVD-ROM (then it's easy, remove the DVD-rom temporary), or of 1 of the two harddisks (then it gets more difficult; because removing the harddisk means I can't boot the system anymore).

    I've again attached the log, and I've attached the DVDinfo for the Verbatim disk. Confusing (to me) is that it says there's only 1 layer? (this is the disk I've just burned).

    Thanks a lot in advance for any help ;-)

    Mike

    Ok Mike there's at least a step in the right direction - you were finally able to burn to dual layer.
    I don't think you need to change a setting in decrypter for ripping this navigation disc since the 1st one you did on a single layer was succesfully.
    You would rip in iso since you need to do a 1:1 image and pick the .mds file to burn like you were doing.

    Your the drive well the DVD rom is on the master connection and the Philips is on the slave connection. The jumper pins settings on the back of the drive should reflect this too (unless a Dell pc - soke use cable select). You could check that to make sure correct.

    Let me check and see what else I can come up w/.

    You are trying to copy a nav disk that probably has both data and video on it, or may have some other protection like safedisc. I would try another program like CloneCD which has a 21 day free trial and is supposed to be able to back up nav disks. CloneCD will make a 1.1 backup and will burn to your DL media. This might work for you.

    @Binkie: I checked what you wrote in your last post; all is still ok.

    @Arnie: thanks for joining the journey ;-) If I'm using CloneCD to rip, what do I need to write? Also cloneCD, or imgburn? (I don't want to waste my costly DVDs)

    Thanks for helping me ;-)

    @mfsa
    Let us know your results on this navigation dvd with CloneCD.
    These navigation ones are not always the easiest to do - though you were successful with the single layer one.
    Might help others who run up against these.

    Hi guys,

    No luck with clonecd; the "extremely usefull" (cough) error message was "18:03:17 Writing to PHILIPS DVDR1660P1 failed!".

    Tried to do a burn of normal data file (the ripped ISO, 7.8 GB, but now in data mode, not in iso mode) and get the error "Session fixation error".

    However...

    - Used the same Nero to burn 1 single datafile (*.pdf, 41 kb) to the same DL R+ I still had in the drive (multi-session, no-close disc) and ... it burns and verifies fine... ( can open the file fine from the DVD).
    - Subsequently extracted the whole ISO to a directory, dragged and dropped the whole tree of that dir to Nero (so a bunch of files and subdirs that together make up the navi disk): "session fixation error"again.

    Huh? I'm lost:
    1. I can write a single layer DVD;
    2. I can't write a 7.8 GB ISO file in ISO mode to a dual layer DVD;
    3. I can't write a 7.8 GB ISO file in file mode to a dual layer DVD;
    4. I can write a small *.pdf to a dual layer DVD.
    5. I can not write a batch of files and subdirs of different sizes to that DVD.

    I guess you all are as surprised as I am?

    ;-)

    Thanks for any help,

    Mike

    Hi mfsa
    Looking at your above post it's sounding more like an issue with your drive being able to burn to the 2nd layer on the dual layer discs. I'm thinking your drive may be faulty here.
    You're able to do single layer and burn to the 1st layer on a dual layer dvd fine (small file test).
    Might be time to call Philips.
    Keep us posted!
