You seem to have put together a good system there; have you heard all the units you're speaking of and read independent reviews? Personally, I think your rears are too directional; I thought the sound was much better when I switched to speakers which radiated more (the sound seem to soar and travel around more if you know what I mean)and I'm sure JBL makes some which are well timber matched to your fronts. Did you choose your Harmon Kardon for any particular reason? I'm asking because I had cause to check out JBLs AVRs a couple of months ago and I was surprised at what I saw ... they have some that were very impressive. With your budget, I can't help but wonder if the better JBLs might not give you more for your dollars than Harman Kardon ... not saying they would but I'm curious; I'm a Denon freak myself but I was quite impressed with what I saw.

Edit: sorry boss, I was thinking of JVC ... don't know I confused with JBL; pehaps because they make stage gear as well. All the same, do a little more homework on the rears...I found fuller and less directional sound better in the rear.

    Hi Dsouth!

I want to post some links for .... your speakers MUST be compatible with each other. You CAN'T put three JBLs in the front and something else in the back. They have to be "timber matched". Have you bought the JBL fronts yet?

The Mirage sub you choose is awesome (mine is a Klipsch but I prefer Mirage) Have you considered something like the Mirage nanostats (link below). They're perfect with the sub you choose and better matched to the power of your Harmon Kardon and don't let the size fool you. With that sub, I can guarantee they'll sound better than your JBLs and fall in the same price range:

    http://www.miragespeakers.com/v2/product_page.php?open=lines&subid=640&id=580

Also, you can find many places that are selling the Mirage "Omnistat" at a great savings because they're being cleared out for the new model... the "omnistat v.2". The "Omnistat" being replaced is one of the best damned speakers I've ever heard and right now, you can find them on sale in a lot of places for about $100.00 each. Those too, like the nanostats, are a better match for your amps power and would drive better than those 250w JBLs. Take a look at them and if you know a place that sells Mirage speakers, go listen to them...you'll be astonished.

    Hi Dsouth:

I don't mind at all; I like to help when I can.

Excellent choices my friend! Infinity Primus is an EXCELLENT speaker...and unlike the 250w JBLs, there is no question that you'll easily and more efficiently drive the Infinity Primus. They are also very well matched. The Primus 160s would go in the rear... yes, they are a bit too directional for my taste but they will be fine, you just need to make sure they are properly placed. The 360s and C25 obviously go in the front. The mirage sub is excellent too and will really rattle your floor and walls LOL!

You are right about the power and crispness of the Harman Kardon and the Primus will do it justice. Your AVR is 65w per channel in stereo and 50w per channel in 7.1. WHen you set up the Harman Kardon, just set the options to "none" when you do the speaker set up ... your amplifier comes with a microphone for automatic set-up so it will probably do all that for you. To many, 50w per channel doesn't sound like much but most companies really exaggerate to the point where they're lying ... Harman Kardon's 50w per channel is exactly that and it will pack a lot of punch.

Anyway, you made some excellent choices for the money. Tell me, how big is the room?

No, DSouth. The Primus 160s are fine! You did a good job! Excellent speaker choices! I prefer three speakered rears aiming front, right and left but that's just me. The primus 160s are a damned good choice.

DSouth, you NEVER want to mix speaker brands between front and rear. I know see it a lot in the posts or see people doing it, but its never a good idea. At the moment, you'll be operating your system as a 5.1 but should you decide you want to buy two more speakers later, be sure you stick with the infinities. The "timber matching" of speakers is more important than I can stress. When you watch / listen to your DVDs, you'll notice that there is a lot of interplay between the rear and front speakers. You'll notice that the sound effects can just swirl around the room but if two of the speakers sound different, it can totally ruin the effects. Let me tell you of two that I'm sure of: Mirage and Polk both make excellent speakers but Mirage tends to be color neutral and Polks can be very bright but both are excellent. You put top of the line Mirage in the front and top of the line Polk in the rear and it will sound terrible even if you're using four of the best speakers made. You never want to mix makes of speakers. The only exception to this rule is the subwoofer...so mixing Mirage and Infinity doesn't matter if its the sub but you would never want to put Mirage as your fronts and Infinity as your rears. THey need to be the same for your system to sound its best.

I'll explain a little later why I asked about the size of your room; I have someone waiting for me. You did a good job with the speakers and I'm sure you'll enjoy them.

    Hi Dsouth!

It was wise of you to make sure that your web merchants are dealer authorized; most are not because they're considered distributers not retailers. I keep meaning to mention that to people but I usually forget. I've always had good experiences with J&R but I never bought anything from Vanna.

Dsouth, don't waste your money buying monster cables; I'm not saying that they're not good but they're a huge wase of money. If you have a radio shack around somewhere, they sell their own brand of good, solid, high quality cables which are fine. You don't want cheap junk either, don't get me wrong, but monster is just a big waste of money and you can get really good high quality cables for less than half of what monster charges. When you get speaker wire, make sure its 16 or 14 guage; you don't want anything thinner than 16g but wire bigger than 14g is unnecessary, harder to work with and costs more than necessary. You can get everything you need at a radio shack if there is one near you; tell them you want good wire and cables (because they also sell the cheap stuff). You'll see radio shack's own brand because they're usually in a special display case. They're black, gold plated, very very solid and very good.

There are a lot of very nice guys and very knowledgable guys here at afterdawn; someone would have answered you soon. YOu can learn a lot here...I know I have. We also have a good time in the "safety valve" forum where people discuss things, or talk and joke. Lots of nice people here.

I do want to write about setting for speaker size when you listen to music or watch DVDs but I'll have to do that later. I hope you are well and stop working so hard LOL! ...Gerry

Amazon will deal with many different retailers but if the retailer is authorized, you certainly can't go wrong.

I wish I had seen this sooner. Like Gerry I was impressed with the Mirage. The Omni-poles have an amazing image depth and soundstage. They are somewhat similar to di-poles used in extreme high end pure stereo audio systems (due to their typically low power requirements and extreme efficiency they, dipoles I mean, tend to be tube driven), but omni-poles are designed to suit in all positions unlike a di-pole that is only designed to be situated at the front corners directly facing the user position.

Anyways, nice choice on speakers, I hope and I am quite sure they will bring you years of pleasure.

@Dsouth...I only just noticed that you'd posted again. How is the system working out Dsouth??

@sandt38...I have mirages all the way around except for my sub. My sub is a Klip which is, frankly, a bit underpowered compared to the rest of the system. I'll change it sooner or later but there isn't any big hurry at the moment. I live in an apartment building now and I'm pretty lucky because my apartment is rather isolated from the others so I can let it rip but still only within reason.

Dsouth ... keep us posted buddy!

@Dsouth...I'm glad you like your new set up ... its always fun get a new toy! LOL! Watch the police though...they (along with your neighbors) don't much care frequent calls !

You shouldn't have to plug and unplug things, something is wrong there...have you figured that one out? Worse comes to worse, you can get a selector switch and switch between the units but that shouldn't be necessary. You're welcome for the help; we all love to chip in but if you haven't figured out this new kink, let us know!...Gerry
