When I try to download sp2 from microsoft's site, it tries to install the "windows genuine advantage validation tool" first and then tells me the update was NOT successful. When I look at my download history it gives me an error message of 0x80070005. Any idea what this is and how to fix or work around?

Is it a pirated copy of windows because you can't update when it is pirated.....That is what the Windows genuine advantage does

NO. Unless the folks who built the computer pirated it. This is what came with the computer.

If you are having probs downloading from MS using Internet Explorer, you can try Firefox. MS has a plugin for FF for the WGA...you can also try out Opera...don't how MS handles Opera.

Just a quick side note, installing SP2 as a separate update/upgrade instead of slipstreaming it and installing as an OS, can cause problems with software/drivers already installed.
