[bold]How To Install The PS2 Memory Card Exploit And Play Backed Up Games[/bold]

Lately, on almost all of the PS2 forums, people have been requesting help with installing exploits and playing game backups, so I decided to write this tutorial. I will tell you how to back up PS2 games and play them from an ordinary external usb hard drive without the need for ethernet adaptors or any extra hardware. The only things you will need to complete this tutorial are:

    - 1 PS2 -
    - 1 Memory Card (must be PS2 card and have at least 1megabyte free space) -
    - 1 External USB Hard Disk (Can be IDE adapted. Must have 20gigabytes or more free space. Recommend 40) -
    - 1 Any Action Replay Max Product (MUST be able to transfer data from usb memory stick to memory card) -
    - 1 USB Memory Stick (Must be FAT32 formatted and have at least 8megabytes free space) -
    - 1 PC (Running Windows 2000 or greater) -
    - 1 Exploit Package (attatched) -
    - 1 Original PS1 game (Check list below) -
    - 1 Copy Of USB Advance (Included with attatched file) -

The following PS1 games will work: (PAL VERSIONS ONLY. NTSC WILL NOT WORK. FOR INFO, SEE END OF LIST)

    - Crash Bash (SCES) -
    - Harry Potter and the philosophers stone (SLES) -
    - Bugs Bunny and Taz timebusters (SLES) -
    - A Bug's Life (SCES) -
    - Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back (SCES) -
    - Nicktoons Racing (SLES) -
    - MUSIC 2000 (SLES) -
    - Beyblade (SLES) -
    - Aladdin: Nasira's Revenge (SCES) -
    - Worms World Party (SLES) -
    - Rayman (SLES) -
    - WipEout 2097 (SLES) -
    - Dancing Stage: Euro Mix (SLES) -
    - Bugs Bunny: Lost in time (SLES) -
    - Crash Team Racing (SCES) -

If you do not own one of these original games, post a list of games you do have and their SXES-xxx.xxx codes (Where "X" is a variable). I will quickly respond and send an updated exploit file. A game's SXES code can be found on the disc or it's box. Eg: SCES-02105.

IF YOU USE THIS EXPLOIT OR ANY PROGRAM PROVIDED WITH IT FOR PIRACY, I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE!!!!

    Now on to the installation:

First, connect your USB Memory Stick to your computer and format it with FAT32 (I assume you know how to do this). When the format is complete, open the provided Tutorial.rar file and copy the file "PS2-SAVE.max" to the root directory of your Memory Stick. Insert the Action Replay disc into your PS2. Connect your memory card and USB Memory Stick. When Action Replay boots, open "Max Memory". On the new screen you will see a message asking you to select a primary device. Choose the picture of the Memory Stick. When the new screen for your Memory Stick opens, you will see a file saying PS2-Link. Regardless of what it is named, it is the only file on your Memory Stick and is therefore the correct one. Place a tick next to it and "Uncrush" it to Memory Card 1. Eject the Action Replay disc and replace it with a supported PS1 game. Reboot your console. When the game begins to load, the screen will flash white and then load to a menu, you will see the text "LaunchELF v3.61" at the top right of the screen. You have now succesfully applied the Memory Card exploit! If the PS1 game did not trigger this menu, then I would suggest re-reading this tutorial to trace any possible mistakes you may have made. If unsuccessful, you may PM me about it.

Now I will explain how to play your LEGAL game backups.

(Step 1) Connect your USB Hard Disc to your PC. Format it using FAT32. Inside the provided Tutorial.rar file, you will see a folder called "HD Content". Extract the contents of that folder to the root directory of your USB Hard Disc. Re-open the Tutorial.rar file and you will see another directory called "Game Installer". Extract the contents of this folder to your "My Documents" directory (or wherever you like). Navigate to the "My Documents" directory or wherever you extracted the files to and run the file called "Game Install". A new window will appear. In the drop-down menu where it says "CD/DVDROM Drive", choose your cd drive letter (Usually D). Where it says "Media Type", choose DVD and last under "Hard Drive", choose your USB Hard Disc's letter.
(Step 2) Put any PS2 game into your cd drive and wait for it to be recognised, then click the "Start" button. A progress bar will appear and the game will begin to copy. I recommend leaving it alone for about half an hour and then coming back. When the copy has completed click the "OK" button in the progress window and disconnect your USB Hard Disc. Connect it to your PS2 which should be in the LaunchELF menu. Press circle to open the "FileBrowser" and move down to where it says "mass:/". Press circle again, you will see a folder called "Loader" with two files inside, one called "SYSTEM.CNF" and the other called "Game Boot. ELF. Press circle on that one. A new screen will appear for a few seconds saying USB Advance, then that will fade out and you will see another new screen saying "Insert a USB device" or something like that. Don't do anything, just wait for a few seconds and you will see the name of the PS2 game which you backed up earlier. Press circle on the "Start" icon and the screen will turn black for about 10 seconds, then your game will run!!!! In-game movies are a little choppy, but gameplay and sound are perfection! Once you have completed all steps, then all you need to do to back up other games is repeat "Step 2"! Tutorial.rar also contains a pdf version of this tutorial.

You can also follow the instructions at my website (in my sig), which makes the process less expensive. And by the way, just about any PS1 game will work, not just the ones you listed. Currently, there is a list of about 800 (or more I think) games that are compatible.

The reason i listed those games is because the included .max file was compiled from a custom edited TITLE.DB. So I can always add more or create a TITLE.DB containing all of my entries and the 800+ from the ready-made file. Also, this method requires no swapping or use of flip-top covers.

Well yes, but yours requires a hard drive, which can have limited possiblities, since the average PS2 game is 3-4 GB (at least now). So with a 40GB hard drive, you'd only be able to have 10-15 games. Basically, your method is best for those with a large hard drive or those with few games.

I had found this place in another forum which seems to actually be a Memory Card exploit for slims. Here's the link: http://console.iscentral.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=455
I tried it, but it didn't work. I have signed up for that forum and I have been suggested to use LaunchELF. If someone could try it, post what happens when the exploit is installed and when it's used.

Actually, if you put cdloader, dvdloader, or zoneloader .elfs on the exploit, then most chances are that more games will load then on Swap Magic. Swap Magic itself already has very good compatibility (aside from a few games that don't work), but cd/dvd/zoneloader are just like "add-ons" to Swap Magic; they load everything that Swap Magic loads normally and most games that it doesn't load. And use LAUNCHELF for your menu, it's the easiest to use.

If you want to use the swap method/use dvd+ or -r's, then follow my guide. The external hard drive method is more economical (even more if you already have one) since you don't have any chances of burning "coasters", but because the PS2 only supports up to USB 1.1, the loading times in games will be either the same or slower than on regular discs.

Thank you so much for the help. I do have extra HD's laying around and I will do that one. Sounds like a better deal for game saves then filling up memory cards too. Do you mind if I pm you if I ever need any help getting this going, once I start? Thanks
