Tweak Ubuntu 7.10

I want to tweak Ubuntu 7.10 TO THE MAX so that it runs faster. Which files, programs, services should I remove? Also, for some reason, my computer under Ubuntu gets hot. Under XP, it didn't get that hot... any suggestions for this and to tweak Ubuntu as much as possible?? Thanks!

 

The best thing to remove from your system if you want to make it faster is probably Ubuntu itself... If you really want to learn a bit about tweaking, install a distro like Arch (plug, plug) or to an even greater extent, Gentoo. Both distros will basically require you to install any apps you want and tweak everything. But believe me, it is worth your patience, you'll learn a lot, and both distros run blazingly fast.

There are loads of guides on the net, Google is your friend. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=89491 is the first result I got and it looks relevant.

As for heat, maybe look into cpufreq. If your CPU supports it, you can scale back the frequency, saving power and thus less heat output. Ubuntu maybe has it installed by default, but you might need to set speed governors to ondemand rather than performance. Just look up anything to do with power saving basically. It might also mean that something you've installed is churning your CPU, have a look at the system monitor and sort things by CPU %. More work -> more power -> more heat.

 

OzMick, thank you for your reply about the page you provided the link to regarding making ubuntu faster. I will apply the recommendations on that page to my system soon. As for faster o/s's like arch, all I can say is that I already had ubuntu 7.10 installed recently and it I'm jut beginning to learn it. Perhaps in the future I can look for alternatives, but for now, ubuntu is my mainstay. Hope you understand.

Had another look at that link, it may not be very relevant anymore (was written over 2 years ago now, for like 5 releases ago). Take it with a grain of salt, and just use it as a general idea of what might make things faster.

Varnull, thank you for that suggestion. I got 2 things to ask you:

1) In the instructions on configuring your system with initNG, when I open up /boot/grub/menu.lst, it asks me to copy my current configuration und append "init=/sbin/initng" to the kernel line. What does it mean to copy my current configuration, and to where? I don't understand this.

2) Have you used this program to boot up your system faster?

 

sudo cp /boot/grub/menu.lst /boot/grub/menu.lst.bak
sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

Find line starting with "kernel", and add "init=/sbin/initng" to the end without the quotes. The link you were given shows that.

Pretty basic stuff...
