    This question may be a little off topic, but I'm a newbie so please bear with me.

    If I burn a TY or any other 8X DVD-R @ 4X will the quality be better than burning a 8X DVD-R @ 8X? And would a 4X burn on a 8X disc be better than a 4X burn on a 4X disc?

    And while on the topic of TY... do they really make a inkjet printable DVD-R?

    Baja150, generally the slower the burn speed, the better the quality, but I've tested TYG02's at 2.4x, 4x and 8x, and the KProbe scans for all of these speeds are identical. This shows just how good TY is, I'm in the process of getting a 16x burner, so I'm looking forward to seeing how they test when burned beyond beyond their rated speed.

    You can get full-face printable TYG02's from SVP in the UK.

    One example of a disc that is better at 8X than at 4X is the Ritek -R 8X G05 discs. I have run a number of tests on the NEC 3500 and others have had the same results with other burners as well.

    I believe this is the acception and not the rule. I have a hundred cakebox of this media in which I had a few bad burns at 8x where as burning at 4x my burns were flawless. I alway burn at 4x and will always burn at 4x regardless of the burner/media. Also perhaps I'm not in such a hurry to where I absolutely need to burn at a faster rate.

    Oh, geez...I posted to the wrong thread.

    Anywho...the label on the SuperMediaStore TY's I just received reads 'Value DVD', but the discs identify as TYG01 with 4X 'manufacturer noted' and 'available' speeds, with a flawless burn, so these seem to be what they are advertising.

    @kchev,
    Have you tried buying one of the 100 pack that meritline is selling with a $4 off coupon for a final price of $31.99. The hundred I bought from supermediastore were TYG01, but these I just got from meritline are TYG02. I'll try to get around to testing them tomorrow, and I'll post my results.

    I would also not be suprised if the burner made a difference as well, although I saw this result with both NEC and Liteon.

    Interesting...it seems that both supermediastore and meritline are over touting the 100 disk 4X -R spindles they have on sale:

    "Authentic Taiyo Yuden DVD-R media, made to the highest standards. Highest quality, suitable for duplication and public distribution. Features archival quality AZO metal dye for today's longest archival playback capabilities. Should last up to 100 years or longer in normal cool dark storage conditions."

    If the quote in the first post in this thread is correct, these actually arent made to TY's high standards and quality. I bought 2 spindles, guess I will have to wait and see how they perform.

    I have used about 15 of these value disks so far and a few looked to have extra adhesive on the outer edge of the disk. I guess there is not as much quality control with these "value" discs.

    This info about these discs not being of high quality should be considered with skepticism. I've burned hundreds of these recently and they've all turned out perfectly.

    To all of those insisting that the discs are substandard, have you actually used them and gotten anything less than the superb results typically yielded by TY media? All I'm seeing is a bunch of speculation, and no first-hand confirmation of any problems.

    just ordered another 1,800 of these "value disc" 4x dvd-r from supermediastore...TYG01...received my order in 3 huge boxes still sealed by Taiyo Yuden (i suppose), huge MADE IN JAPAN written on the outside of the boxes (6 spindles of hundred in shrink wrap inside each box). to anyone skeptical about these TY's being of "lower grade," i can tell any doubters from experience, now with well over 1,000 discs burned on this 4x media, that i have had less than a dozen coasters out of over 1,000 discs (the coasters were due to firmware problems that i resolved soon after). if that isn't strong enough evidence from EXPERIENCE, then i don't know what is. i posted in a different thread since i recently found out that i received fake TY02's a few weeks ago from a friend, but, to assure anyone ordering these 4x TYs..they burn like a charm.

    I bought some of these from meritline.com. They are recognized very slowly by my DVD player (Philips DVP-642). They seem to play alright after recognized if I burn at 4x. When I burn them at 8x I get skipping near the end of the movie. The only discs I have used for movies before these are Ritek G04 and G05. Both of those work flawlessly at 8x.
