I recently backed up my C: drive with Nero 7 using Drive Backup. I have had to reformat my C: drive and went to use the Bootable Disc I had created.
Unfortunately, this did not work. After booting into Linux, it said
[bold]'Nero Backitup Drive Restore Program not found on disc. Please enter second floppy disk containing the Nero Backitup Drive restore Program'.[/bold]

I then put in a support call to Nero, who didn't have a clue but told me to send an email outliniing the problem. This I did last Monday.

A few days later, I noticed that they had updated Nero 7, so I downloaded the updates and created an *new* bootable cd to see if I could restore my partition.

On booting to the cd, I got a nice red splash screen and then Linux loaded. Alas, then I get the message
[bold]Nero Backitup not found on disc!!!
    Setting up interface lo...
mv: unable to rename '/tmp/backitup/startup': no such file or directory
mv: unable to rename '/tmp/backitup/startx': no such file or directory
mv: unable to rename '/tmp/backitup/xinitrx: no such file or directory
chmod: startx :No such file or directory
    /etc/init.d/rcS: 30: ./startx: not found
Please press enter to activate this console[/bold]

I have emailed Nero Support 3 times with Infotool data, and spoken to them about 5 times. However, 2nd line support have not got back to me.
It is now 5 days since I first contacted them, and nothing seems to be happening.

If anyone can tell me how I can restore from a boot disk, or if they could email me the correct files that need to be on the boot disk - this would be really useful. I have asked Nero Support to give me this info, but again, they don't seem to want to help.

I have a fully registered & paid for copy of Nero Premium and a case number for the support call (Case Info: [1322619002]), but no communication is forthcoming.

As a computer support technician for 18 years myself, I am disgusted with this service, and I will definitely use a different product in the future - as well as asking for my money to be reimbursed for this product

    Please - can anyone help........??????

All I might do is go through the procedure for backing up and see how it went.

Did you select "drive backup" when you did yours?

Why do you say "boot to Linux"?

If you made the bootable disk using BackItUp, is should boot and give you the options you need to restore. Does the disk not boot to DOS?

No - it does not boot to DOS. Which version are you relating to?
Version 7 uses BackitUp2 and boots to Linux - honest!

Yes, I did select drive backup.

Anyway - the backup files are fine (I think) but it doesn't get that far, as it can't find the restore engine to even give me the options.

I was just looking at the help file, which says DOS. I guess I will have to try to make a disk to see what is going on.

Yep, you are right--it boots to Linux. I did the disk and it would boot in one computer, but not in another. The one it would not boot in, which is the one I have Nero on, has an ATI chipset, so that may have something to do with it.

The only thing I might suggest would be to check and make sure you installed the program in the normal place so the files can be found. I saw no options when making the bootable disk except where the target disk was. All necessary files are supposed to be in that directory.

Mine are in the directory below with 7 files and a backitup.zip folder. Maybe the .zip folder did not get unzipped.

    C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Nero BackItUp\BackItUp_DriveImage

My machine has a GA-8IE2004P mobo with Pentium 4 3g Proc.

My Nero is located on my E:\ drive (I have 4 drives installed in this server).

I don't think that this should make any difference, as it seems to have found the files to put on the cd (but I could be wrong...!)

The files I have in my directory are as follows:

    E:\Nero 7\Nero BackItUp\BackItUp_DriveImage

    backitup.xml
    backitup.zip
    boot.msg
    isolinux.bin
    isolinux.cfg
    linux
    logo.16
    root.img
    versalang.txt

When I create a bootable disk, these files are copied to the CD with the exception of [bold]isolinux.bin[/bold] ....is this relevant?
Are these all the same files that you have?

I'm sure the boot disk (on booting) would not be looking for the original installation of Nero - as this may well have been deleted. So in my mind the neccessary restore files should be on the bootable cd. I'm confused, as it would appear that I have the same files as you.....

I don't have the versalang.txt file either in the directory or on the CD. It wouldn't seem a text file would be a problem.

I have not tried to look for a backup file since my system won't boot with the CD, but I did get to the restore program on another computer without Nero installed, so it would appear the backup program it is looking for should be on the disc.

I don't suppose your files are corrupted, or the wrong versions? Mine are dated 8/24/06 except for the linux.bin which is 05 and the backitup.xml which is 9/22/06, which is the install date.

Try you cd in another computer and see if it will get to the restore routine.

The software does create a ramdisk, so maybe it is on a different drive than expected, or maybe Linux cannot get to the device you are using (E:).

The files are all the correct date (newer than yours - but maybe that is due to the latest upgrade).

Anyway - I tried your idea on a Win2000 laptop that I have, and guess what?

    The restore engine initiated!!!! WTF????!!!

Go figure! So the problem must be with my machine..??
    Now I'm completely flumoxed.
I'm wondering why it won't boot correctly on my pc.

The recovery boot CDs created with imaging software like Paragon or Acronis can boot Linux or DOS. Sometimes the Linux version does not work because of driver problems. When this happens, one can use the DOS version.

I would not trust Nero to do this kind of critical work. Better to use specialized products like the ones mentioned above.

    Thanks for the comments Zapatero.
Wish I'd known before I formatted.

I've used Nero for several years, but never had to do a drive restore. Its typical - you pay for regular updates, and when you actually need it, it doesn't do what you need it to do.

Incidentally, I received an email from Craig (Nero US Support). I think this was in reply to an email I sent to a few Nero email addresses. He contacted me to say that he had chased up the support manager over this. Hopefully I will receive some feedback in a couple of days (not including this weekeend I guess!)

Are their any other programs that can restore from a Nero DAT file??
    Anyone?

OK, I found something that might help.

Open Nero BackItUp. Under File, options, Expert Features--go to the bottom of the window and deselect the "Create bootable disc with Nero BackItUP Drive Image". Click OK.

Now, make another boot disc with BackItUp. This one will not boot with a GUI, but more like a DOS window, even though it is Linux. This disc booted on my computer where the other one would not.

Last night - in a rather drunken state, I had an epiphany.
If the restore engine won't start on only one of my machines, then the problem must be on said machine, not the software.

Well, I realised that the cd drive I was using for the boot was an external DVD/RW USB drive.
I removed this drive, and installed an old cd drive internally.
The result - [bold]it only bleedin' worked! [/bold]

So, the moral of the story is - don't attempt to boot & restore from a USB drive. It doesn't work (at least not with Nero anyway).

Thanks Saltgrass, for all your help. If it wasn't for you recommending trying it in different machines, and Zapatero mentioning drivers I would never have realised.

As for Nero support - what a bleedin' joke! For a professional company, I'm appalled by their service. Its now a week after I lost my data, and they still haven't even started to look at my problem.

I think I shall get a refund, and purchase True Image or someother recommended backup software.
