hd is most likely a sata instead of ide so change in bios to ide so don't need to press f6 for 3rd party drivers that the sata will need if left as sata in the bios.

did you delete all the partitions then make new partition(s) before formating the drive? acer site only has vista drivers, no xp. chipset, vga & lan is by nvidia. audio & wireless is by realtek.

when 1st loading xp, it gives you the option to delete, make new partitions & format the drive. is is just after pressing f8 for agreeing to ms policy is when that shows up.

the hd is still set as sata not ide in the bios. change in the bios from sata to ide, not the boot sequence. i checked acer site & is a problem with their server in accessing the user manual.

i just got my laptop back. can i hook my hdd to my laptop with a usb to sata connector and install xp that way. ive got my dvd burner from my desktop hooked to my laptop burning a dl dvd. i cant change my bios to what ive been told, so this is the only thing i can think of. acer tech support is horrible. i cant even order a recovery disc from a pc built in sept 08.

It sounds like you need the SATA driver for Windows XP. You can get it from the following link, along with other drivers.

    http://komku.blogspot.com/2009/01/aspire-m1641-m3641-m5641-windows-xp-and.html

If you have a USB floppy drive, you can install the driver by pressing F6 during the Windows install routine and installing the drivers from a floppy. If you don't have a floppy drive, then you'll need to use a program called nlite to slipstream the driver into the install disc.

Here's an example of how to use nlite, along with a link to download it.
