Can't you just install 2nd edition as an upgrade. It should install the needed second edition files. Seems like there was also just a second edition upgrade for the original 98. What about Windows update from Microsoft? I'm just listing possibilities. I had the complete 2nd Edition back then when I used 98.

    Triple posting is bad.

But what you should is if you want to install Win98SE, you should do a full format to clean your Hard drive and instal it fresh. Win98 is a good OS from windows but really picky. But As far as I know Microsoft droped suport for Win98 series. If you still want updates and fixes, you will need to buy the newest version of Windows.

Actually support was extended for Windows 98 until June 2006.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_98

What that article doesn't say is that Sun was going to start heavily promoting it's Java Desktop as a replacement for older hardware still running Windows 98 that wasn't practical to upgrade, so Microsoft extended support to keep people from going over to another platform.
