I have now tried 2 failed codes so perhaps the next one needs to be right.

I have had the phone about 3 yrs and have contacted Virgin but they don't seem to able to obtain and provide the code (bearing in mind that I have been with another provider for quite some time whose sim card had been accepted in the phone). Or perhaps they don't want to be bothered.

Any further ideas? Am I missing something when I enter the code which Jamescuck provided?

if your fone is allowing 2 different sims from 2 different providers
your fone should be unlocked already!
also your provider has got the unlock code for that fone as its locked to their network, the first provider (you got the fone from)

also you did put the code in proper like press the * key 3 times to get the P ect.ect.. also if virgin is not the original who owned that fone then that would be the wrong code you got (not that i can vouch for any codes given)

Thank you guys for your help. I did have 2 different providers and I think that worked because they were both on Virgin Network.
Anyway I don't intend to follow this further because my daughter Gave me an "old" phone - a Samsung M610 which is working perfectly.
Thank you all for your input.

ahh that explains how you got 2 chips to work
dont worry about the "old" fone, once it makes a call and lets you text :)
also have a look in the markets or some fone repair shops will unlock for around £10
