    I guess I am looking for suggestions and possible answers to something which has bothered me for awhile now. I have two sons in the military and send them backup copies of dvds they like. I always make sure the backups are ok as far as I can see and even watch many of them myself on my dvd players. However, my oldest is back from Iraq and says most, but not all, of the dvds I sent him this past few months stall out at some point, then if you go to that same point an hour later, it will play fine for 15 minutes, then stall out again, etc. I thought I had read somewhere that the problems like this are due to the dvd players, not the dvd. He and the other son have had problems watching dvd copies on laptops and stand alone dvds. But, I rarely if ever have a problem, and I have three different dvd players I use. I have for the past four months or so used dvd fab express and dvd shrink and burned at 2x. I use sony or HP 16x max -R DVD media. I also have the almost latest Nero burning software. Anyone have any ideas what their problems could be? I know I had a dvd/vcr that did NOT like +R DVDs, so I went to -R and all was well. I do not understand why they would have all sorts of problems playing dvds that I have absolutely no problems playing.

    If they are using newer players, you might want to try +R and if you can get some Verbatim media that might also help. I also have an old player that doesn't like +R media, but but I don't have that problem with my new player. This is only a suggestion, but it could be a place to start. Good Luck.

    cziembo ,
    Welcome to the forum. I think your problem is media compatibility. One of the neighbors sons also is in Iraq and I send him DVD's all of the time and w/ no problem. I am using Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden blank media and he has no problems viewing the movies and he loans them to others. Now he is viewing it on the laptop. He too was having problems w/ the company DVD Players as some would play and others would not. What happened was the desert atmosphere was not good to the gov't issued DVD Players. As the US Gov't was prone to do they overpayed for the players like they do the computers ( competitive pricing). We shipped a Cyberhome ( Wally-World special ) over there and it plays everything. If only the gov't had bought cheap instead of buying the most expensive one out there all would be fine. The Cyberhome when he comes back will rotate to the next unit that takes their place. Hell that was the best $45.00 we ever spent as shipping was free as we are close to Bragg and Pope AFB.
    I would first go the blank media route and if your burner can , you can booktype the (+) DVD's so they will show up as DVD-Roms as thusly they will be more compatible w/ the Gov't Players

    thanks car.mike. I have been at a loss to explain the kids complaints. I have seen posts from people recommending verbatim, etal. I guess I will have to search the stores in town for them and try it out. however, I have also just run into another problem. I lost my computer yesterday and bought a new one. another gateway, and it had a qualitek burner on it. I bought nero7 and removed the qualitek and installed nero7. however, when I used dvd shrink to burn a decrypted movie, it would not burn lower than 6x. I always used to burn at 2x for better quality. Am I doing something wrong here or have something not set right in either nero 7 or dvd shrink?? there is no option in dvd shrink for any burn speed less than 6x. any ideas what is going on?? note: the oldest boy is now home from iraq on 2 week home leave, the youngest in in fort polk, louisiana for jungel t rainig, and the girl is in fort jackson, sc for basic. a family of soldiers, to be sure.

    cziembo,
    In Nero under the ToolKit you will find Nero Drive Speed. Insert the blank media you will use and let it read the blank media. Click on Options and you should be able to add the various burn speeds and you can set the speeds there.

    In Shrink under Backup> Burn Options the speeds should be there after doing Nero.

    I usually burn at 1/2 the rated speed of the blank media unless there is a problem and then I burn at 4X

    well, car.mike---I used a Fuji 16x and dvd shrink only let me burn at the lowest of 6x. I then used a sony 1-8x and it let me burn only at the lowest of 4x. thus, it recognises the dvd and apparently selects the speeds for you. I went into nero and rooted all around and it said I was capable of burning at from 1-48x. however, dvd shrink apparently recognises the nero7 differently than the nero6 programs. If anyone knows how I can burn at 2x, let me know, but I also noticed that when I installed nero7 ultra, it made itself the default viewer for my dvd case covers from my jump drive. what a pain?? every software company wants to be my default program. I haven't yet figured out how to go back to my old HP software as the default, as Nero is rather circumspect on how to do that. always something.

    cziembo,
    I am still using Nero 6 and will not upgrade until all of the bugs get worked out as you have found some. Drive Speed should have set the speed. Did you manually set the different speeds in Nero. In other words did you input allow 2x, 4x,6x and so forth when you were is Drive Speed.

    @cziembo.............
    Have you tried Booktyping a +R disc? It makes the discs more compatable with players. Here's some info on it:http://www.k-probe.com/kprobe-bitsetting-booktype.php

    @Car.Mike..........
    Are you in Fayetteville, or somewhere else? I'm in Goldsboro.

    Oh yeah, I'm familiar with the area some.
    Before he retired, my stepfather was part of mamagement at Nortel.
    My last job had me going to RDU Airport every morning, about 5 a.m.
    Kinda glad to be gone from that one....... :)

    Are you into HT at all?

    You must not be into it, or you'd know. :eek:)
    HT stands for Home Theater. You know, 5.1 surround sound. I'm into it big time......

    Sounds like a pretty nice system. I spend more time at Home Theater Forums, while online, than anywhere else.
    Not a huge hockey fan, but would like to see the Canes play, since they're the home team................
