    Hello,

I am having trouble buring DVDs. The Nero logfile contains a "Unspecified target error" but I also see "KEY_HARDWARE_ERROR" and "KEY_ILLEGAL_REQUEST" which seems up to no good.

I followed the advices in related threads. Nero has been upgraded now to version 6,6,0,18 and I loaded the latest firmware on the AOPEN DUW1616/ARR burner (1030). After restarting the PC the problems still remain.

Simulation of a DVD burn gives "simulation not possible on media" so I cannot include a simulation log file.

Down below I include the logfile of a DVD burn trial.

Writing CDs however goes fine, simulating as well.

The very first DVD I burned went fine however (some weeks ago). The next gave problems as mentioned. I am using one type and brand: DVD +R That's Write and haven't tried others yet.

System information in addition to the logfile:
    P4, 3.2 GHz, 1536 Mb, WinXP 5.1 service pack 2.
    AOPEN DUW 1616/ARR with DMA=on

If anyone has a suggestion please let me know. Thank you in advance.

    Ben.

    @Bizan
An unspecified target error is usually caused by the media your using. Since you firmware is update and Nero still can recongnize it that's probably your issue. That's Write usually users some poor quality manufacturers like Princo (eck!)& Vanguard Also the simulation is failing due to the media.
Switch over to Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim these are the only ones I would burn at 8x speed.
You also have InCD installed - uninstall it and go to Nero site and dl and run the clean tool for InCD to get rid of it.

The drive doesn't recognize the media.

Last time I checked, the media "That's Write" were not on the Aopen list of approved media and burning at 8x probably won't help.

It may be because your burning to fast or because incd is present on the system.

I see you are runing the viamraid and I dont see VIAMRAID.SYS which is the driver. The dma is off on it as well.

You may need to go into bios for the controler and check the dma settings there. For the raid controler I dont think it will be as simple as uninstall the controler and let windows install on rebooting.

I would also check into puting something on the primary ide controler. Even if it is one of the dvd drives. Primary ide should be port 0 where you have both dvd on port 1 and the hdd's on the raid.

I've uninstalled InCD properly and tried burning at lower speed. No luck unfortunately. Next step will be buying Verbatim DVDs when the shops have opened again. If still no luck I will further study whompus' suggestions on dma setting and ide controller.

    Best wishes on 2006.

Both of your hard drives drivers DMA are Off, enable it back On by uninstalling the controller's drivers. Go here http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260038 and try to fix it.

For some reason, both your burner and Nero can not read/recognize your blank media. What kind is it? The only media I recommend are (1) Taiyo Yuden, (2) Verbatim "advanced azo/datalife plus", (3) Maxell (mij by Hitachi Corp.)

You may want to take a look at your burner. Check all cables to make sure it sits properly and tight (make sure it's not loose or over-bent). Use a can of air to blow dust out or clean with a CD/DVD cleaning kit.

Again, this refers to the media, perhaps it's an unknown brand of media. Possibly cheap dye. See above reply for high quality media.

Again, it's the media. See previous reply for other high quality media.

Try to slow down to 4X with other high quality media as mentioned above.

Unfortunatly The dma for this system is going to be a bit more tricky. Will look more like this

Thats why I said it will most likely be a setting in the controler bios somewhere. It does differ from controler to controler.

Also some of the other issues could be because nothing is on the primary ide controler. May not be an issue. Could however blow softwares mind when a device is found on secoundary controler and nothing found on primary.

In this case 2 devices on secondary and none on primary. Might mean nothing. I have just found if ide devices are being run in systems with scsi or raid they sometimes act a fool if none of them are on primary.

I've bought and tried Verbatim Advanced AZO+ +R at lower speed (4x) but behaviour is identical.

I haven't tried yet to turn off DMA on the hard drives (this seems a bit more tricky indeed because I hesitate to uninstall the HDs and the BIOS does not offer me any DMA off options yet. Need to study more. Would this really have so much impact?

Tomorrow I will first take a good look at my burner like alkohol suggested because also with Verbatim the blank media is not recognized by Nero or the burner and simulation is also still not possible. Seems like a DVD recognition problem to me, also because CDs are written fine.

So the drive does not recognize the Verbatim?

When you take the good look at the burner. Put it on primary controler and other on secondary. The way you have them both on secondary and nothing on primary may be what is causing the issue.

    just passing thru...

    - your burner's firmware is not recognising your blank discs.

This is similar to what you should see -
    - ie when the firmware's up to date you see a 3line paragraph similar to above
