I am new to this stuff, so please forgive any mistakes on my part.
I am ready to buy a dvd upconverter and see them advertised at Wal-Mart as either 1080i or 720p.
I bought a 32" Emerson LCD and it works great w/direct TV and Dish Network.
In my TV book (it says) 720p or 1080i- I am throughly confused and I really do want to buy a DVD upconverter - I'm vapor locked.
After reading the confusing arguments I don't know which ones best, and don't know which ones will even work on my Emerson LCD.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Your 720p tv probably converts 1080i to 720p, because it's native resolution is 768 horizontal lines (not 1080). At 32" you won't see a diference between the two anyway. So if you set the DVD player to output 1080i, your tv has to process it back to 720p to display it.
Below about 50" screen size neither is better, but I would prefer the 720p picture.
