I don't yet have a HDTV, but I know many people in this forum have said that they have watched movies processed with DVD-RB and can't tell a difference between the original DVD and the back-up on their HDTV. My question is, is anybody using an upconverting DVD Player and if so, how is the quality?? Also, what resolution are you upconverting to?? Just wondering because I want to get an HDTV and use an upconverting DVD player, but am scared that my back-ups won't look very good when upconverted and force me to drag out all of my originals. Thanks in advance.
I have a 42" Samsung Plasma tv using a RCA upconverting DVD player. I have it set to upconvert to 1080 and the quality is fantastic! I cannot get HDTV where I live, just standard cable. For my backups, all I use anymore is DVDFab Decrypter to rip to hard drive, the DVD Rebuilder to compress. And always do full DVD. Rebuilder is really the best IMO.
@ebega My SONY is HDTV ready any time (it has DVI input), but the thing is my DVD players (both Samsung & Philips) doesn't have any HDMI out-put. Therefore, I'm still using Component Cables + progressive scan via my TV set. I should be getting a PS3 soon (I'll be using HDMI to DVI) and do some testing/settings and see what's the differences.
I have an RCA HDTV ready and I was wondering the same thing about upconverting burnt movies. Since I too have only a DVI input and all upconveting DVD players use HDMI has anyone used a HDMI>DVI converter with good results on an upconverting DVD player.
Well I'm getting a PS3 this friday, or at least I should be if the local Best Buy gets them in stock but it is my understanding that the PS3 will not upconvert DVD movies, only show then at 480p.
Oppo makes an upconverting dvd player that has DVI out http://www.oppodigital.com/?partner=yahoo&OVRAW=oppo&OVKEY=oppo&OVMTC=standard I don't have one yet but am faunching at the bit. The 971 is on my wish list.
I like both 971 & 981, but I still think the prices are a bit high just for a DVD player. Maybe I'll wait until it drops to $100 - $150, then I'll get one.
I've got a Pana 34wx53 CRT HDTV. It has a DVI connection. I use an HDMI to DVI cable between the set and my SONY DVPNS75H upconverting DVD player and have to tell you the picture quality is fabulous. Much better than the previous SONY (prog scan w/component connection)and JVC (non prog scan w/component cable connnection) DVD players I was using before. Why is there such an improvement I'm not 100% sure. I think it's a combination of a great DVD player with the digital connection. By the way I've never used Rebuilder just Shrink.
For one thing you're upconverting to 1080. You can't really use those two in the same sentence. For anything that requires less than 80% compression there isn't much difference but for 80%+ nothing can compete with dvd rebuilder and your choice of encoder.
