Whenever I start up my computer, I instantly have a tab appearing that is named update Properties, then it says...

    Type: Application
Origin: a number here many digits long

Then I have the option in the middle of the tab to Restore if I do that it doesnt do anything.

Then as clickable commands at the bottom, I get Ok and Cancel.

The only way I have found to get rid of this is the USB Mass Storage Device icon when I start up... although I dont have a USB Storage Device in a USB slot, this still comes up. If I click on "STOP" the USB Storage Device it stops and says I can safely remove the USB Storage Device I click ok and the update properties tab and USB Storage Device is gone and all is well until the next time I reboot.

Any ideas how to get rid of it? Its driving me nuts!

Not sure what you have tried at present but some initial things i would try are,

Remove any hardware or software i had added before the problem became evident (especially VMware).

Remove any external devices like printers scanners etc to see if problem still there.

Run microsoft updates and virus scan

    Set BIOS defaults

Use system restore to a previous good working date.

Check for problem devices in device manager, possibly uninstall all USB controlers and let OS reinstall after reboot.

Check what is running at start up in MSCONFIG, check if problem is evident in safe mode.

I havent added any hardware but I did add things like Ad Aware and Spyware blaster around the same time this started.

    I have no external devices

BIOS is set back to defaults

System Restore doesnt go back far enough for me when the problem started.

In Device Manager there is one There is one USB Mass Storage device that has a yellow caution sign with it it. I tried before updating the driver, that didnt work, I tried Disabling that didnt work and I tried uninstalling and then letting OS reinstall it and that didnt work.

In MSCONFIG I dont see anything that would be Mass Storage Device update tab on startup...unless it could be named something else...

*Update* In Safe Mode this does not appear so I dont know what that means.

I also forot to mention that I get the error:

    service.exe. - No Disk

There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive \Device\Harddisk1\DR1
    \Harddisk2\DR2
    \Harddisk3\DR3
    \Harddisk4\DR4

I have to click continue on that all 4 times before I can click stop on the USB Mass Storage Device...its all messed up. Dont know why. I plugged an MP3 player in the USB slot once and I use it for my Ipod but thats it.. never had another problem until 3 weeks ago or so roughly

    strange problem,

If you have the motherboard disc, have you tried updating driver in device manager searching from disc

Possibly install motherboard chipset drivers if you have the motherboard disc, any USB, card reader, webcam, bluetooth drivers,if you have any of these devices built in. If you have no disc suggest downloading drivers from motherboard website.
