I got my sister a macbook that came with tiger installed and a leopard upgrade disk that came with it from ebay a couple of months ago. I asked her recently and she says she's still running tiger. Neither of us know much about macs. Should she upgrade? Can she sell the leopard disc on Ebay?

There is no reason not to upgrade to Mac OS 10.5 Leopard. You'll be able use Leopard's new features and avail yourself of security and stability improvements.

Ethically, if you choose to sell your Leopard upgrade disc, you're obliged to wipe Leopard from your system.

However, you may need the Leopard upgrade disc in the future. If you need to restore your system at some future date, you'll need to restore Tiger from the restore discs, then you'll need to use the Leopard upgrade disc to install Leopard.

She still has tiger OS installed. It seems she could get around $75 for leopard on Ebay? Is leopard much better? Shall I convince her to upgrade? I presume she will loose all data and settings if she does.

Leopard has many new worthwhile features:

You do not need to erase your hard drive to install Leopard. You can do an Archive and Install upgrade. The Archive and Install upgrade will preserve your files, applications, and settings.

Remember that you may need the Leopard disc in the future; however, the decision whether to sell is ultimately yours.

    I recommend upgrading to leopard.

Most new software is going to leopard and some universal applications that say they run under tiger and leopard only run under leopard.

In all do aspects leopard is worth the upgrade.

I would up grade to Leo, Also the Leo disc you have should be a full version not an upgrade. It was most likely a drop-in disc, Basically the macbook was made/packaged before leopard came out but was not sold until after Leo was released and they (apple) dropped in the leopard disc later on. but Leo is very nice, i like it for time machine.

I don't suppose this would be legal, but would it be possible to upgrade the macbook to Leo but use the tiger disc that also came with the macbook on a shuttle PC I'm building?

I'll make this quick. Upgrade the MacBook, don't sell the disc (as it can not be used on most other macs). If you want to put Tiger on a PC, you need to search for information on Mac OS x86 (hackintosh).

BTW, it is a violation of the EULA to create a Hackintosh system.
