For about 1 year I am burning DVD's, but after a few burn problems were already starting. Reading a lot of Nero forums I decided now to place my desparate need for HELP!! on this forum.
First I thought it were the discs, so tried (-R) Maxwell & Memorex, (+RW) Philips & Maxwell. Now I ended up with Platinum (-R) which was recommended by 'professional' friends. Although I am working on a 'old box', it worked fine in the beginning, but now Nero keeps asking for "enter disc" and shows the message "disk drive: empty". The weirdest thing is that sometimes Nero starts burning, but not always finishes. After all these months I decided to upgrade to Nero Ultra 8 (coming from 7); is this a okay next-step or should I stay with 7?

The log below says it all, and waiting for the key to be ready, pppffff...

Please, can anyone help me with this one?

The only things that jumps out is that your firmware is 2 versions old, thus your burner does not recognize the discs.

Update your burner's firmware here, version 1.07 is available:
    http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2066

nero 8 is known as having lost of bugs yet. I would stay with 7, but that's me.

You also have very little memory, it is recommended to have a minimum of 512mb RAM to burn successfully, suggest you add a further 256mb.

NERO WORKS BEST WITH SONY BURNERS. I HAVE TRY'D OTHER BURNERS. I ALSO REMEMBER THIS SAME PROBLEM. SINCE I HAVE SWITCHED TO SONY, THAT ERROR HAS NEVER SHOWN ITS FACE. I'VE BEEN BURNING DVD'S FOR SEVERAL YEARS USING NERO. I TRY'D NERO 7 AND DIDNT LIKE THE NAVIGATION.
" IF ITS NOT BROKE, DONT FIX-IT " I WENT BACK TO NERO 6.

I think that is a rather general statement backed up by no real evidence. You could say that a certain burner would be more compatible with certain media, and in his case that seems the case. You cannot blame Nero for media incompatibility. You had great success with your Sony burner. I have not had a failed burn in 2 years with my NEC burner-so I guess I could draw the conclusion that "Nero 7 works best with NEC burners".
Caps are considered impolite, seen as shouting:~)!Might want to turn them off(I think it was something written about it in the "Forum Rules"...maybe I am just mistaking!)
    @Mokum67
The link I gave you to update the firmware, it is actually for your reader, not burner. Your burner seems to have an up to date firmware.

I don't know what the specs of your system are. You do indeed have very little RAM memory. You just have enough for your OS to run properly. If you do decide to buy more, make sure you buy the proper kind. It is not just about how much MB you have, but also how fast it is. You could achieve the same performance with 500MB fast memory that a different PC might be able to get with 1 GB of slower RAM, or even better.

Nero 8 is stupid!!! I haven’t seen worst program upgrade! I installed it and it didn’t work on CDs at all. I was able to burn dvd but not CDs. In the end I removed 8 and installed back 7….everything works just fine. Visually Nero 8 is also stupid and confusing…many settings are missing and everything is well….STUPID!!!

Someone is very unhappy with Nero 8! If Nero were a person, it could accuse you of libel!
Nero 8 is indeed buggy so far. I also have still a version of Nero 7 , and not thinking of upgrading yet. HoweverI am sure that there people , that have been successful with Nero 8.

Unhappy?! That is so mild statement. I am very angry at Nero 8!!! They should’ve finished it and then release new version. This way I was busy all day long trying to figure out what is wrong with my computer. And it is all messed up! I with good luck to those people who can make it work…I will stick to Nero 7 from now on.

Firstly I like to thank everybody for providing me with support and feedback regarding the problem I have logged on this forum.
You're great and I really appreciate your help in this.

Next what I did and what the status is now:
I have updated the Asus firmware but this did not solve the problem; Asus is just my reading drive and the problem is more with the external LG-burner.
Luckily I had the opportunity to plug-in another burner (Samsung SE-S204) to find out if my LG-burner is scewed up.
    Guess what?
Nero did not report any errors, all media is recognized and it is burning CD's/DVD's like there is no tomorrow.

One more question for you specialist; someone told me that it is possible that some burners quit burning DVD's but still burn CD properly, or the other way around.
For me as an newbie, this sounds not very logically to me.
Can one of you shine a light on this topic?

Whether Nero 8 is really so bad, I can not tell. It works fine for me.
But I will follow the Nero forums closely, and if necessary step back to Nero 7.

    Once again, many thanks 'specialists'!!

It is possible for your drive to quit burning DVDs but still burn CDs. The DVD drives have 2 lasers built in, of two different wavelenghts, one for CDs and one for DVDs.
Did you find any firmware update for your burner?

    @ Cyprusrom
The firmware on the LG-burner is already the latest version.
I guess one of the lasers is failing but I will test this shortly on the PC of someone else.
If I have news about this I let you know.
