Well yes, but by the sounds of it that's a Socket 939 board, and Socket 939 chips are out of production and you can only buy second hand ones off ebay.

The X2 is miles better, IF you can find one.

That shouldn't be a problem...there are about a million of them looking for new homes.

X2 Socket 939 are scarcer than hen's teeth (at a reaonable price) and overpriced due to their scarcity.

When I was faced with the same dilemma, I decided to forklift to an AM2+ platform. CPU and MB were cheaper than what the X2 939 CPU would have cost.

Sempron is to X2 as Celeron is to Dual core.

I'd help you for postage...but I already did so twice and have none left. Try ebay...they have lots of 'em, some are even new.

Most of them seem to go for about $100 (the lower end ones). Fine for an upgrade I suppose, but very expensive for what you get.

Maybe I'm jaded because I live in Silicon Valley where technology is plentiful and cheap, but I see absolutely NO reason to pay $100.00 for a X2-anything Socket 939 CPU unless your existing motherboard is made of gold.

Example: Today, one of our local tech deals is

    "AMD Athlon 64 X2 7750+ Black Processor & BioStar A760G M2+ Motherboard $89.99 ". Newegg has CPU only for $59.99.

Yeah, that's exactly it. Plus, such options are only available in the US to any extent. They're not that common here in the UK.
