I have bought a new computer which came with Vista. My daughter's computer has Windows Me as its operating system. Can I replace her Windows Me O/S with my now surplus XP (OEM) and if so, how do I do it?
if you have a xp disc you can put it in and simply install it! make sure your computer meets the requirements now if you select the option upgrade (after you've put in the disc) you should now that you may encounter some issues i suggest backing up all your documents, pictures, movies, music on to some sort of media (CD-R, external hard drive, flash stick..) XP minimum specs for SP2 (real world use, not just getting a desktop up) cpu 450MHz ram 380MB graphics 12MB FSB 100Mz L2 cache.. yes 512Kb You can tell that's one of the first of the pentium 3's.. they were for ME, but you may find a 400mhz P2 doing good duty as well... some will some won't. So looking at those specs you can forget your old ibm/cyrix 266/300/333.. they have no l2 cache and won't run it no matter what you do, but they will run n00buntu quite well if you keep the screen res to 800x600
Thanks all. I shall check things out carefully before I do anything. This is my daughter's computer, ktulu 14. I have a nice new Lenovo with Vista. My daughter's problem is that she was given a secondhand Sony digital camera which isn't compatible with Windows Me. My spare copy of XP is OEM. Will I be able to load it onto a different computer (it's not on mine)?
NOTE: some OEM disc will only run on computers of the same brand/manufacturer yes you can install it on another computer...HOWEVER it will prompt you for a license key, the only one it will register is located on your xp's computer tower, so once you have installed that windows on 2 computers only 1 can run it legally, if a Microsoft genuine check is run on your daughters computer during an update or Microsoft download both computer will both have there keys blacklisted making them both void in the Microsoft system which means... no vital security updates that the oem disc is missing will be installed on your daughter computer both computers will lose all future updates and most likely(not quite sure) tech support that was packaged with the first license code dont mean to sound so gruesome but having a legal windows OS is something you want/NEED your best option would be to buy a disc, not to much prices range from 50-80$'s -tripplite
