I'm in the research stage of putting a HTPC together. I've been backing up my dvd's with shrink and decrypter for years. My question is can you upscale a compressed video file running either off the hd or a dvd. Thanks.

The best you can do is adjust the viewing mode (brightness, contrast, etc) but that's about it. The picture quality on the dvd isn't going to change.

once you drop resulotuon and compression you can never get it back. Try taking a jpeg picture, then save it at 50% compression then try and blow it up and save it at 100% compression. It will just get blurry and ugly if you do. The same thing will happen if you try to enhance the DVD back to what it was.
