Hi everyone. Sorry for the long story, but I have to give as much info as possible so it's easy for everyone. I have recently purchased a plextor755a dvd writer. The problem is that it only reads at 2 speed regardless to the speeds being changed. I use dvd fab dycrpter, dvd shrink, and nero burning rom. Everytime I put dvd or cd media into the drive it will ony read at 2X speed regardless of the media type.. Even if I change the speed it doesn't work. When I go to plextor tools and change the speeds it doesn't make any difference. The drive burns info to the hard drive as if it's playing it. when I go to nero drive speed it registers as 2x max speed once used.I own an 8xspeed burner and it registers at its correct speed. If I burn a dvd5 which should take 5-10 min it takes 30. If I burn a cd file it will take 10 minutes instead of 2. However, the drive will write to blank cd and dvd media at the speeds you set it but not the other way around. This is the second 755a plextor have sent me and still the same problem. I have used these burners in several pc drives and get the same results. I Was advised to depress the eject button for five seconds to deactivate riplock, but it hasn't made any difference. I used a friends computer and ran both burners one after the other and they only read at full speed a few times.I did this so he could witness the situation first hand, and so I know I'm not delusional. I put in a dvd on shrink which clocked at 25 minutes encoding. Then I ejected it and repeated, only to hear the drive slow down to be clocked at 50 minutes encoding. I did this on both drives with different media on dvd fab decrypter, dvd shrink, and nero burning rom. Constant nonsense. One minute they would spin fast and whistle at max speed then they would slow down and hum at around 2 to 4 read speed.I have never experienced this with any other burner. Whats going on? What should I do? Please help! ANYONE! I have sent this info to plextor who seem less interested in the performance of the drive and more interested if I'm trying to copy, copy protected media.
The riplock the manufacturers place on the drives limit read speed to 2X for commercial copy protected media which is why Plextor assumes you're trying to rip copy protected commercial media. That said I thought the 755a lacked a riplock based on a review I read at CDFreaks. What firmware do you have. 1.05 is the latest I think for that burner: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2210 Also make sure your transfer mode is DMA and not PIO. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260038 Since you say the drives burns at the correct speed, I don't think DMA vs. PIO transfer mode is the issue. It just seems as though the drive is having a difficult time reading media and that's why it's slowing down. I don't have riplocks on any of my burners and yet some DL media presents a challenge to be read for whatever reason and I cannot get read speeds above 3.5X. Other DL media will read/rip at 9x or above. It may just be the particular media being read but I don't understand why it will read the same media fast on one occasion and slow on another. Maybe someone else has some ideas. [bold]Edit: added below[/bold] I saw your post at CDFreaks as well. If you get an answer there that solves your problem, be sure to report back here as well what the solution was.
Thanks for your help and advice. Will perform all the actions you stated and will get back to you with the latest as soon as possible. One thing though, it's not just dual layer copy protected discs that are the problem. Its dvd5 dvd-r dvd+r cd-r etc.Discs that have no copy protection on them at all.I put in road to perdition and it said 25 minutes encoding on shrink.Took it out put it back in, and then it said 50 minutes! The whole point of a 16 speed writer is to perform its functions regardless to what the individual wants to duplicate.
Yes I understand your point. It is very odd that doing the same thing back to back would cause such a disparity in times. I think this is something the Plextor people need to address.
I also had difficulties using DVD Decryptor and AnyDVD. I was able to successfully backup using VobBlanker 2.1.1.0. From here, I then used DVD Shrink and Nero to complete the backup. Hope this helps.
Dear members. I am still in the same situation with 2 brand new plextor 755a writers that won't read any media over 2x speed to the hard drive. I have tried various things including advise given to me above. Plextor are now dealing with the problem, but don't seem to want to accept what is going on. Has anyone out there experienced the above problems with any plextor burners? Can anyone help me find a solution? As plextor seem the least knowledged in tackling this weird occurance. I thank you all in advance for any help and advice. Thanks.
Does that Plextor drive have any smart technology or a secure mode that ensures quality reading? If so, that will need to be disabled to get fast ripping speeds. When you hold in the tray button until the light blinks 3 times, does that provide a fast rip every time thereafter, does it last for the 1st rip thereafter, or does that not work at all either?
Dear Laddyboy. I will perform all the above tests you advise, and get back to you a.s.a.p Thanks in advance for your patience and time.
laddy boy you are the best. Thanks to you I have made the impossible possible. I did what you said concerning the quality/read technology and the drives are performing perfectly. There are 2 drive speed/quality functions called POWER REC AND AUTOSTRATEGY.You have to disable the power rec so you can change the read speed settings of any media inserted in the drive. The same applies to autostrategy which develops it's own database in order to categorise the best writing strategy for different media types. Why plextor didn't explain this is beyond me! It was a 30 second job (that plextor still haven't got an answer for), and now the drives work at the maximum speeds regardless to the pc they are connected to. Have a good one and keep up the good work. Really much appreciated.THANKS A MILLION! POWER TO THE PEOPLE!
kwamesead. i have Plextor drives and have called Plextor several times and there never any help. i would call Plextor and tell them someone on aD fixed the problem for you and there tech support sucks lol. skibear, to use dvd decrypter with anydvd you need to set it up this way To use DVD Decrypter in conjunction with AnyDVD as stated per Olli ->OF SLYSOFT AND CLONEDVD Proceed to the DVD Decrypter Opening Page - Tools - Settings I/O Tab - Click on "Elby CDIO-Elaborate Bytes" General Tab - un-check "Check For Structure Protection"
Dear laddboy. There is a catch concerniing the plextor 755a drives I own. When I put in a copy protected disc I hace to depress the eject button until the green light blinks 3 times. This I have to do every time I put in a copy protected dvd. However, when I put in copy's it works just like any burner should.. This sucks! I thought the drive unlocks indefinetly. Why do I have to do this after each rip? Is there a cure for these symptoms? Anyone!
IGNORE THE ABOVE MESSAGE!I have JUST put powerec and autostrategy back on. I have enabled read spead IN PLEXTOR TOOLS and the drive is working perfectly. Thanks to everyone who responded to this thread. POWER TO THE PEOPLE! Now at last this thread can be closed.
I'm not a Plextor user. Maybe someone who is can help you. aabbccdd apparently is so maybe you could ask. I always thought Plextor drives lacked a commercial riplock so this is why this whole thread has been puzzling to me.
