I don't know if I am at the right forum but the thing is, I really don't why my PC and/or windows XP recognized my PSP (Sony Playstation Portable) only when it is running in SAFE MODE. Originally, my PC/windows do not recognized the PSP when it is a plug n play thing that once you connect the PSP via USB cable to the computer, Windows XP will automatically recognized the system and treats the memory stick attach in the PSP a Mass Storage Device. At normal windows operation, I cannot make the PSP connect to my PC. Windows/PC doesn't seem to see it connected even if the PSP is already in USB mode. But when I run my pc in SAFE mode, the PSP is recognized, connection is established. And this really puzzles me. It is also tiring already to shift from NORMAL to SAFE mode. Additional Info: PC Pentium III 550 MHz, 256 MB memory, 4 port USB card (USB 2.0) mounted on PCI slot. OS Windows XP Service Pack 2. Other USB device connects esily to my computer. My mobile memory stick is recognized as Mass Storage Device under normal windows/PC operation. I really need your help badly. Thanks.
once you have plugged in the usb if nothing happens again mate try and go to control panel and click add hardware and this will determine if it is picking it up if this doesn't work you may have something that is stopping your usb drivers from working properly because in safe mode everything runs simple which means that in the proper mode something maybe be stopping it but try the add hardware option and let it scan and tell me how you get on mate
Rickster0, I already did your suggestion. And it is clear to me that "something" is "stopping" the windows from detecting my PSP when connected during windows normal operation. And that's what I would like to know...I would like to know what programs and/or devices are restricted during SAFE MODE. I am not very well verse in using Windows XP and I am not familiar with all its features yet. Joeva, I already read your thread and it's what brought me here. I started a new thread because I see that we have a different scenario. But I am also considering the solution about "trying another USB cable". I guess sometimes the solution is the least we expected ha. I tried to look for other cable here but I haven't found out one yet. I also have tried all the other suggestions given to you in your thread but nothing is successful. Thanks for your posts/replies guys. Sorry if I haven't replied instantly. I guess that's the fact about living in different "time zone".
Actually, the different cable is a good idea. I have 2 miniusb cables, one that has the mid-line filter thing, and one that doesn't. For some devices, either one works. (Digital Cameras, for instance) For some devices, only one or the other works. (Cell phones) For some, one will connect, go "da-ding!", and then not show anything. (MP3 players/cell phones) Were I you I'd try to connect other USB devices to the same port and see if they work. I've got..wait lemme count...I think 13 USB ports on my system right now across 6 channels, and 3 of the ones on the front work for some devices, and not for others. Probably out of IRQ range or something. Try the back plugs if you're using the front plugs, or vice versa.
Well, my computer doesn't have USB ports. What I mean is that, the USB ports are available via USB card I installed, mounted on the PCI expansion slot of the motherboard. The USB card brand is iNTEX. It's a 4+1 port PCI USB card (USB 2.0). At first, I was considering of replacing the USB card but when I was able to connect my PSP to my PC running in SAFE mode, I hesitated. I figured that it might not be the problem and I would just waste money on replacement. For now, I want to know what might be stopping my PSP to connect to my PC during normal windows operation, that my PC/Windows doesn't seem to see that it's already connected. Even when I run the "add hardware" wizard, nothing happens. Nothing is detected though my PSP is already connected and in USB mode already. I tried every USB port available but no success, except in SAFE mode of course. It is really confusing.
That's what I'm sayin dude. I have an expansion card in my system too, because I wanted more slots. Sometimes they just don't work like they're supposed to, or at least w/ some devices/cables. I'm not sure what in particular is blocking you on this one, I'd try running registry mechanic and checking in device manager for conflicts. Safe mode just doesn't load any drivers but the system level ones, so perhaps you have another driver or something interfering. Maybe something simple like a printer, maybe there are actually some non-generic PSP drivers you installed, even accidentally, I don't know. It might also be SP2, it's been known to cause some device conflicts occasionally.
Guys, I don't know if I'll be happy with my latest finding. I can connect now my PSP to my pc in normal mode, and windows XP recognizes it and the memory stick, installed the necessary drivers. The real problem is the limitation of my USB card, I guess. I run my pc in SAFE mode and checked again the "Device Manager" and verified the devices and/or controllers being blocked or disabled. I verified that HIgh Speed Host Controller for 2.0 USB Root Hub is being disabled during SAFE mode, which is the reason why some USB 2.0 compliant and/or compatible devices doesn't run in SAFE mode, especially those requiring high-speed transfer mode. PSP's memory stick, being a High-Speed Mass Storage Device needs a High-Speed Host Controller to function at its best though it can be plug in a standard USB port but transfer speed is affected. This is the reason why a message stating: "You must connect your device to a USB 2.0 port to improve transfer speed" appears when you plug-in the PSP in a USB 1.1 port. The USB card installed in my PC is compliant with USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 Specification. However, data transfer rate is only up to 480 Mbps. I am not really sure if the card is the problem. It is also possible that the USB-mini cable I have is the problem. Anyway, what I did was to disable the High-Speed Host Controller (Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller)from the Device Manager. It's a good thing that it did not give any problem to my other USB devices. Thank you guys. Your inputs really help. If anyone find my "solution" rather not useful and you know some "problems" it may do to my computer, please advise me. Edit: I am not sure about what I did: Disbling the Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller which is needed for High-Speed transfer and/or by High-Speed USB devices. Though it made it possible for me to connect now my PSP to my PC under normal mode, I am still not 100% sure if this is OK. Can someone verified me if this is safe? Would my "solution" affects my PC's performance? What problems I might encounter? Thanks in advance.
