Here is what symantec say.... Error 626: "Operation is to be performed on a hard drive not visible from boot-mode" Situation: You see the message "Error 626: Operation is to be performed on a hard drive not visible from boot-mode." Solution: This message can occur if you are attempting to perform an operation on a drive that Microsoft® Windows® detects as a fixed drive but which DOS does detect at all. This most often happens with USB, FireWire or PCMCIA hard drives. Because Symantec imaging software must boot to a DOS environment to perform some operations, these programs may not be able to perform operations on these types of drives in a DOS environment. To avoid this problem, make sure that all operations that you perform with USB, FireWire, or PCMCIA hard drives can be performed within a Windows environment. If you want to create images of or resize partitions on drives of these types, they must not be the drives on which the operating system runs, and no programs may access files on those hard drives. When creating images of partitions that have open files on them, such as your system partition, you may not save the image to a USB, FireWire, or PCMCIA drive because the computer must restart to a DOS environment to create the image. Before attempting to create an image of a partition that has open files, make sure that you have access to a different drive or partition that the software can access through DOS; for example, a partition on an IDE hard drive or network share. This problem can also occur if the jumpers on your hard drive are incorrectly set or the drive is not detected by your BIOS. To resolve this situation, consult your drive documentation to make sure that the drive jumpers are properly set, and verify that your BIOS setup program detects the drive and has the correct information for it. But this doesnt help me! Im wondering if anyone out there knows how to read the usb drive again once partition magic has set it to not active and invisible.
