Hi have just got the EX7000 and looking to install a usb hdd does the drive need to be powered ie 3.5" with external power supply or does the usb slot have enough power to run the non powered 2.5" external hdd's that are used to give extra storage on laptops. Mark
Any hard drive will work if you power it with a external "power brick" so that the USB port does not supply the power. Usually the smaller notebook size USB drives will work fine without external power. Any (well behaved) USB device will first draw about 100mA at first and then ask for more power (up to 500mA). If the port won't supply it, the USB device is suppose to stop working or not draw any more power.
