Please somebody help me! I have a 250 gig external usb HD. last month I had a 200 gig I think I got a virus or something and it said your diretory is corrupt or unreadable. Basically the file structure got corrupted. I spent 3 days with a recovery program and retrieved a 160 gig of my data. Well I needed somewhere to store so I upgraded to a 250. Well the same thing has happened twice now in 1 week to the new drive. It only happened when I slaved my old HD, which I wasn't using anymore I reformatted my 200 gig and use it for my internal. I also just built a new computer and this still happened on the new computer. It has to be a file I am carrying from one drive to the next which is causing all this. Weird but it only corrupts my external hard drive. If anybody has any ideas let me know before I go insane. Thanks. I have went everywhere on the internet you guys are my last hope, thanks again for any help.

Norton, I think I found out what it is by looking at the logs though, vbs gaggle worm. I'm not sure but last time this happened I got this virus or worm or whatever the hell it is. I'm thinking about just restoring windows, because from my reseach it makes changes to the registry. I don't know how to manualy edit the registry. I did download spybot but it seems that would have only helped if I had that running on my computer before I got the virus. I think maybe the RIAA is responsible. In the research I did this virus has been released onto almost every p2p network. Anyway I could be way off but this is all I have been able to come up with. I am using a retrieve program on my external but the files are so corrupt this time I don't think it will work, even thought the last 2 times it worked great. Have you ever heard of something specifically target external HD's. Thanks for any ideas you may have.

Thanks for the link. I tried it, no luck though. Why don't you trust Norton? I think your right I found a list of files that this virus was in and it most likely it was on my exteranl HD. It is in various zip files, exe files I know I have downloaded, crack files etc that have been flagged. I am out of Ideas I am going to try wiping all my drives and starting over. But I have heard even when you reformat it can stay on your drive. Do you know if this is true? If you have any other ideas I would be greatful. Thanks.

norton is a memory hog & have customers with viruses that norton didn't pick up. i use avg7 free edition & before that avg6 for about 3yrs with no problems. if using xp, can do is delete the partition than make a new partition before formating the drive!

I installed Norton on my PC. I downloaded all the updates. In under 1 minute I got a virus. It goes without saying what I think of Norton.
There are a lot of people who dispise norton. I would go with what ddp says, AVG for free is an excellent anti-virus & is updated regularly.

PS, Get rid of norton, never let it darken your PC again!
