the other day for seemingly no reason, my usb ports stopped working on some things. on my creative vision m and external harddrive. when plugged in, computer states that it cannot find the driver for them and that the device has malfunctioned. if anyone has a clue what to do to fix, please let me know. i went to the creative website and downloaded some programs that went with the vision m to no avail. i cannot find something that specifically states is a driver. is this a sign of the impending death of computer. am running xp. thanks
computer says "one of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it" when the message bubble is clicked i get something that says unknown device. am working on the whole drivers bit. my computer maker says that all of my drivers are up to date. am now trying with the microsoft website.
Two things happen in the computer case. Software or Hardware malfunction. However..in the Device Manager both will look very similar in nature. If you cannot get the devices running after the chipset/USB drivers are updated...then it's most likely the South Bridge on the motherboard that has gone bad. One way to verify that is to get a PCI USB card and see if that card has any issues. It uses a separate USB chip and runs on the PCI bus...vs the USB support built into the South Bridge.
