Hello All. I've always used my Pioneer DVR-107D which has an IDE interface to the mobo. I use DVD Shrink, with Nero 6.08 Ultra. Now using DVD Shrink: After I run Shrink, I choose Backup, Okay so far. Now I get to Burn settings, to which I always have had no problem writting at maxium. (Here's where I get confussed) Below the burn settings, there remains 2 additional options. |_| Boot Type DVD-Rom (AND) |_| Burn at least 30mm (DVD+R/RW high compatibility mode) ___________________________________________________________________ Using My Pioneer DVR-107D With the (IDE Interface) This Option: |X| Boot Type DVD-Rom (Is checked) But the entire line is non-high lighted. This Option: |_| Burn at least 30mm (DVD+R/RW high compatibility mode) (Is never checked) And is completely high lighted. The completed burn always plays on all my on set players. ___________________________________________________________________ Now, using my new Plextor PX-716SA: (Serial ATA) Which is connected to my mobo via my SATA interface. The Options after Burn speed change somewhat. (Again, this is where I get confussed) This Option: |_| Book type DVD-Rom (Is'nt checked, but can be) The entire Option is high-lighted for use. This Option: |_| Burn at least 30mm (DVD+R/RW high compatilbility mode) Isn't checked, but high-lighted for use. So, I've tried it with the Booktype DVD-Rom option checked, and it didn't play on my "on set players". Then I left it unchecked, and it automatically made it a "Book type DVD-Rom. ____________________________________________________________________ I've never used the other option, the "Burn at least 30mm (DVD-Rom/RW high compatilbility mode) plus, I have no Idea what it's for. But once using my Pioneer DVR-107D, I somehow must have checked it, and I had another Coaster___________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ Thanks so much, for reading my request. I sure would appreciate any advice that anyone might have to offer me reguarding these issues. Sincerely, Tom
Booktypeing or bitsetting as it's sometimes called is just a matter of compatibility for players and it only works with +R media. All players are supposed to play DVD ROM discs. So a disc booktyped to DVD ROM should play on all players. I've yet to need it and as you noticed it's not even an option on all burners. The newer players will play the regular recorded DVDs without a problem. So, I guess it can be handy if you need it. Most people won't though. Burn at least 30mm (DVD+R/RW high compatibility mode) means exactly what it says. With that option at least 30mm of the disc is going to be burned. Depending on the media you use, either of these burners could be too fast. The Pioneer has a max of 8X and the Plextor is a 16X. Most people don't burn DVD backups over 4 to 6X. The faster you record, the higher chance of having write errors. Some people get away with recording faster and others don't. There are different variables involved, and I tend to believe they've lucked out if they're able to burn successfully at 8X consistently without problems. At higher speeds, even things like disc balance become more critical.
