I have an unlocked Nokia 3220 (originally locked by Rogers Canada). I am trying to use it in Pakistan while travelling and it doesn't seem to work. The unlocking was done using the codes provided at the unlocknokia (forgetting the exact address right now) website. It worked fine. But when I put a SIM for Warid Telecom (or Telenor Pak) both of which are supposed to work at 1800 MHz (the 3220 is a tri-band phone (see http://www.cellphones.ca/cell-phones/phone-specifications/236/) Is there any other trick to getting this to work, or shall I give up and get a local mobile set? http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/cou_pk.shtml
See the link I gave (http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/cou_pk.shtml) It suggests that at least two vendors (Telenor and Warid) run on 900/1800 band. I have tried both sims and not working. Wondering if there is a config I need to tweak in the phone, otherwise I'll just have to get a new set.
My guess would be that they are GSM 1800 ready for future roaming partners but for now they only run GSM 900 MHz
Never hurts to ask, maybe we'll all learn something from this. I'm just guessing what may be the problem but until you make the call, we won't know.
Hay botham02 What exactly happens when you try the Warid sim? What do you see on the phone? Do you see "No Network " or something? I too would like to learn. JG
botham02 Have a look at this. The problem you will have is finding a service that has the coverage you need. Depending on your location, you may be able to find one that works. Have you tried a manual Network selection? http://www.csoft.co.uk EDIT Have you tried this? Select Menu > Settings > Phone settings and from the following options: Operator selection > Automatic — to set the phone automatically to select one of the cellular networks available in your area. With Manual, you can select a network that has a roaming agreement with your home network operator. JG
JG, I don't get a service when looking for an operator, either set to Automatic or Manual. I haven't called Warid yet, will do and report here.
I called Warid support and the person I talked to said that Warid didn't have 1800 MHz service in Pakistan. I have given up and bought a cheap set to live by for the next few days.
Thanks for the reply and for giving us those answers. Sorry the 3220 wouldn't work for you but we all learned something from this.
