I use utorrent fairly often. I'm on comcast and have there free Macafee software. Is this sufficient. Or should I get nod instead? safe practice is to scan any exe. or downloadable content right?
There is more to protecting yourself when downloading then blocking viruses. There are goverment organizations, businesses, and many other groups trying to catch you downloading so they can file a lawsuit. Thankfully there are ways to protect yourself and Rav009 has written a excellent guide on how to protect yourself.
Yes, everyone who is "in the know" for P2P will tell you to run some type of IP Blocking Software. And many will recommend PeerGuardian(which is a IP Block. Prog.) due to its ease of use and the small amount of system resources it uses.
You'd be nuts not to use peer gaurdian. Make sure you check for updates everytime you start it. Downloading anything containing .exe's, .dll's or the like, will always be risky. Its a good idea to choose popular torrents and read the comments left by others first.

I had Mcafee installed for several years. It picked up few things. One day my CPU has @ 100% from Explorer.Exe. So I scanned with Mcafee, nothing. Downloaded Avast, 4 trojans.
