    Hello,

I am using shrink to burn my dvd's. When it becomes time for Nero to write to my disc I get an error message. I only get this message when I use 16x dvd-r, when i use 8x dvd-r it works just fine. Any idea's on what is wrong?

    Hi titums
Firmware not up to date and/or media using come to mind.
What's the make, model and firmware version of your drive?
You can find this in NeroToolKit>InfoTool. Pick the burner - in the drive tab there will be a field for the firmware version.
    You may need an update.

What media are you using? Some drive also don't write at 16x speed to -R media.

    Hi Binkie,

Thanks for the resoponse I have a memorex burner.

The Firmware Version looks to be 8WSE or BWSE I can't tell which one because the first part of it is cut off.

    I am using Sony 16x DVD-R. The sony's work fine with 8x dvd-r.

Well this burners max speed on -R media is 8x - 16x for +R.
Looks like from your firmware version your model is the Memorex DVD+/-DLRWL1 F16.
You are using the latest firmware.
Try taking the burn speed down to 6x or 4x if you are receiving burn errors.
    See if that helps.

If not you can always post your last log from Nero (just guessing that is what you are using to burn - shrink auto burns w/ Nero installed) and we can go from there.

lol - no titums you're not - shrink just has it in a little less noticeable tab. After you click 'backup' there's a tab to set the burn speed called burn settings. Here's a pic:

Let us know how you make out.

    Hi titums
Part of the log is cut off but 1st thing let's edit out that serial # begins w/ 1A at the top of the log.

Part of the log is cut off too. Since you're using this version of Nero w/ Shrink - Nero API version: 6.6.1.4 you're probably getting a this error Error:\nCannot connect TRF
So uninstall this version (write down serial # 1st), run the clean tool then install this version (last one of Nero 6 to autoburn w/ Shrink).
    Here's some links:
    Package 1
    http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe

    Package 2 (recode & vision)
    http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe

Let us know how that goes.

    edit: typos

    Ok titums
You're now getting an illegal disc error.
More than likely it's because of the media you are using TYG03.
Great media but the problem looks like since your drive hasn't had an update to the firmware for over a year it doesn't like these 16x Taiyo's which are newer to the market.
The current firmware probably doesn't contain the media codes the drive needs to properly write to/fully recognize the media.

It's probably why you've been having problems all along with the 16x -R's. Your failure is almost instant.

Still uninstall InCD (if you're not using it) and run the clean tool - see if this helps.

Two other opinions are to crossflash this drive w/ LiteOn firmware. Your drive is actually a LiteOn SOHW-1633S but if you have a warranty it will be voided. You also run a somewhat risk of messing up the drive (just a heads up).
The other is to use 8x -R media in this drive - same brand you are using - looks like you either bought the Taiyo's online or bought made in Japan Sony's. Or other goods ones are Verbatim or made in japan Fuji (usually made by taiyo too).
    Keep us posted!
