    Newbie Questions. AMD Athlon 750mhz/256ram/20g/120g HDs/DVDRom&DVD Burner/Win98SE.

Following posts and instructions by Scuba Pete and others. I used DVDD to transfer to my HD. No apparent problems.

Question 1. How long does in normally take to transfer the DVD to the HD? Mine took an slightly more than an hour.

Using Shrink I opened the files in the Video_ts folder and attemped to remove unecessary stuff (following SPete's directions). The program appeared to "lock up" in the writing phase. At exactly 1% it did nothing for more than 10 minutes, so I ended up cancelling it.

Question 2. Shrink took a long time "encoding" the files. Probably almost an hour, is that normal?

Question 3. Why did Shrink lock up?
Question 4. I am not sure how to eliminate unecessary files using Shrink, is there a good description somewhere? I did not follow well the SPete primer. Guess I'm slow.

Question 5. On my system (Win98SE etc.) can I utilize the dual layer DVD Burner that I have or is it limited somehow to single.

Lastly, I have ICOPYDVDs2 and I attempted to burn with it by opening the Video_ts file and it appears to be doing it just fine. Does anyone know if Icopy compresses like Shrink? Will I get the whole DVD or just the main file (no menus etc.)

Thanks to any and all for answers.

On the tabs above you'll find guides. Click on it. Your answers for both DVD Decrypter and Shrink are there. Time transfering files to HDD depends on the size of the DVD and the speed of your computer and the speed of your DVD ROM player. So it's normal for your computer @750M and 256M ram. You aren't limited to single with a dual burner unless you wish to be. As for your last question, let me get back to you on that. I'm sure someone else is using ICOPYDVDs2 and will be able to help as well. As a side-note, it's time to upgrade your computer. It's a dinosaur! If it's a money issue, don't feel bad. The one you have will do fine until you can afford to do better. I've been there! Hope this helps!

I'll echo that the ripping time is probably about right for your system, which is a little behind the times. My slowest system is a 1.8ghz Celeron w/ 256meg Ram. Normally @ 15 - 20 minutes to decrypt a typical movie CD. Normally about 15 minutes to encode a main movie with Shrink.

Encoding takes a lot of power. If Shrink locked up, did it give you an error code? If not, something was interfering with the process. Make sure that all other programs are turned off, especially other ripping/burning programs. Don't multitask, like surfing the net, while the process is occuring (go have a sandwich).

As to "eliminating uneccesary files", actually what you do is select the ones you want. When Shrink finishes analyzing, hit the Reauthor button. The various files will be on the right. If all you want is the main movie, click and drag it over the left side, then hit Back-up. Shrink will do it's thing.

If you're not sure which of the extras you want, just highlight one then move your mouse over to the black screen on the lower left side and hit the play button ">". It will play the highlighted selection for you. You can do that with all the titles. The ones you want to keep, just drag over to the left side and Back-up. I never back up the extras - they just take up space and force the main movie to be compressed to a point where it affects playback on a single layer blank disc. Besides, if I ever really want to see the extras, I just play the orignal DVD.

I've never used ICOPY, but it advertises as making a complete backup. Must use a tremendous amount of compression. I wonder how well the copy plays?
