Am using ConvertXto DVD 4 to convert .avi's and others to DVD 5+9,
am bit of a beginner with convertx, would using a two pass encode give a noticably better result generally?

It will probably help with action movies inasmuch as the two pass method analyzes the video and figures out which parts need more of the available bits to get the best looking result.
The one pass method applies the same amount of available bits to to each frame regardless.
A 'talky' movie with little movement from frame to frame is less processing intensive than a car chase.
