I purchased a Sony Vaio - VGC-RA710G preloaded with Windows XP MCE 2004. Sony offered an upgrade to MCE 2005 & I purchased it. All was well, then a few days ago I turned on automatic updates, & went to the MS update page. The "validation" screen popped up - I ran it. The results were that my copy of windows was NOT genuine. I tried the Active X & renaming the .dll file that both Sony and MS offered as the fix. They didn't work. I pulled up the system info for the product key & found that it's different from the product key on the back of the computer & the product key on the Sony MCE 1995 update. Any ideas how to fix this? Everything about my computer is legal, I purchased & have receipts for the computer & the update disc. Sony has been quick to respond, but it seems they are more interested in getting me to call for help & pay $20. rather than help me on the free e-mail help.
The installation key is a generic key, but should be valid. The one on the COA sticker might work if you use a key changer to change the key.
