just a simple question.. will the quality be improved if i convert a vcd to dvd?? or will the resolution & quality etc remain the same?? this is not found in the vcd to dvd guide..
it will be pretty much the same. Although, everytime you re-encode, you will lose a little quality which is to be expected... but it shouldn't be noticeable... unless you are a stickler for quality.
You can't actually improve the quality, but you can keep what's there. Simply rip the mpegs from the .dat files using VCDGear. Author them directly to dvd. 352x240 aspect ratio (VCD) is DVD complaint, aka "1/4 D1". DVDLab will do this. Demux when prompted, and have dvdlab transcode audio when prompted. I have a guide if you need it.
Good answer, rebootjim. And you all remember: you're always subject to this 'rule': garbage IN = garbage OUT. You can, doing things wrongly, decrease the quality of a movie [e.g. encoding a DVD rip with TMPGenc set on 'Motion search precision: very fast (lowest quality)']. But you can never encrease it. Tne only gain in 'authoring' VCD movies into a DVD is that, since 2h VCD movie = 1200 MB, instead of needing 2 CD for storing 1 movie, you can have 470' movies (about 4*120') into a 4.7 GB DVD and twice in a dual layer one.
You need to 'author' (make a DVD/a DVD image from your starting movies). The application (the only one) which accepts (S)VCD movies as input (other application, like Nero, will try to convert a 352x240 movie into a 720x480 one!) is DVD Lab http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/dvdlab_review.cfm .
so is there any software that you all will recommend so i can play all my .wmv,.asf,.rm,.mpg,.avi,.dat(vcds) and etc common formats on my dvd player? i really hope to backup those tonnes of video files on my harddisk and free them up.. i would prefer quality be lossless or even improved.. just a small question.. how can i register the gabest matroska splitter .ax files?? there are two, 1 in unicode release folder and one in release folder.. there's no insturciotns on guliver sourceforge website too..
No. You will have to encode them all to mpeg-2 (or DivX if your player supports it). Tmpgenc is fairly good at encoding most formats, with the plugins, but it will require multiple tools to correctly do .rm and .dat Impossible.
any suggestions for .rm and .dat? hopefully simple ones as i'm quite a newbie.. i thought .dat is the same as mpeg?? i once tried changing the a .dat to .mpg and it plays as well..
.DAT is a MPEG1 file with header: a 2 files: MyVideo_A.MPG and MyVideo_B.MPG authored to VCD becomes 2 files: AVSEQ01.DAT and AVSEQ02.DAT into the D:\MPEGAV directory of the VCD. onverting one is easy: VCDGear: choose DAT -> MPEG. To load .RM files you need specific plugins (usually it's simply a .VFP file you have to copy in the TMPGenc directory). I don't agree, rebootjim. If his DVD player can read VCD files (MPEG-1) authored into a DVD, the conversion is not needed, and in this case the 'DVD with lot of VCD movies' is made in a lossless way. A conversion is needed ony if the DVD player needs MPEG-2. yandao87, are you really sure your DVD player cannot read VCDs? Did you read well its instructions? Maybe the problem is in the media (low-quality CD-R brand) you used. It's 'common sense' to know that not all DVD players support SVCDs, but 100% of them play VCDs.
aldaco12: my dvd supports vcds.. it is mhurst's dvd player that does not support vcds how do i know if my dvd can read mpeg1 files on dvd? if my dvd support vcd, does it mean it'll read mpeg1 files authored on dvd too?
If you read up a few posts, you'll see that I said this: A VCD is totally DVD compliant. This means, that you can use VCD's extracted as I mentioned, and author them directly. For OTHER files (I sure wish people would read before jumping down my throat), you WILL have to re-encode them, and this is where tmpgenc comes in. For RM, .wmv and .qt/.mov, look at the guides on www.vdieohelp.com There are also links to the best software for the process.
