Verbatim Video Guard, 10-pack, 8X, DVD+R Thanks everyone BOTH for the PM's and the links here in forum. I've ordered the VideoGuard DVD's, the LightScribe DVD's and a new BenQ burner ~ I HAVE to try those discs ) (sorry, heard too many complaints about the HP640) (I do so loves my toys Cheers all, Pete
Yo scubapete: I just pulled out my new HP 640-c and replaced it with my old benq 1620. Got a new HP pc that came with the lightscribe after my main pc blew up! The compatability was just a little worse on the stand alones I play them on,but not as bad as some of my previous burners. Mainly because I wanted to re-rip one of those hp backups with my spare pc which has a newer benq 1620, to make a copy for a friend that couldn't play that hp backup.That specific backup was on a taiyo yuden, Yuden000-T02. That HP also coastered out a Maxell-002-00 full hub printable,made by hitachi.Ripping on the fly was also more difficult. Good luck with that benq 1640. I haven't heard a lot about them,but if it's even close to my benq 1620's,then it should be awesome.
Saugmon, I have been following HP drives since my first one a HP200i and I will say they are consistent. They pretty well suck. DL DVD burners have been out slightly over 1 year and though that's not enough time to establish a "track record" the complaints against DL burners has all been silent EXCEPT for those drives made by HP. When someone has a drive problem, it seems it is always an HP burner that has been to blame for excessive coasters, the poorest recognition of media and worst compatibility with software. BTW, the burner I've ordered is the BenQ 1625, a DL, 16X, LightScribe external unit. I'm hoping it will be slightly better than my Pioneer 109 DL, 16X. My Pioneer, like all Pioneers' is a workhorse and 100% dependable. Drawbacks: Pioneer burners are unable to change book types as can the BenQ, Lite-on, Nec, LG, Nu Tech, Plextor and RICOH drives. I also wanted to use the LightScribe feature but didn't wish to wait until someone came out with a "Hack," 'Flash" upgrade. It s/b here in about 3 days, I'll let you know how it goes. Pete
Scubba....... did you get the blue LED lights? I think that looks cool! I also had the HP200i and it was a nightmare! So many coasters and I must admit I was really a noooooob then! now with over 300 under my belt I'm better, because aD makes you better.
@scubapete i have the pioneer 109 as well, and if you are willing to try a different firmware, i have successfully FLASHED mine with the buffalo firmware (v 8.57 now)that now allows bitsetting~ you are correct in stating pioneer line drives do NOT have the booktype capability, but, that can be resolved; at least with the pioneer dvr-109, because i have successfully done it myself just thought i'd let you know if you are willing to cross-flash and go through a few steps to enable booktyping~ i wouldn't have believed it either, until i did it myself... here is the thread where teflonmyk showed me...i don't know if he did it to his also, but, i had initially flashed my dvr-109 to the A09 firmware...THEN proceeded with cross-flashing to the buffalo firmware (link to the firmware is in this thread) good luck if you are willing to try it~ i for one am VERY happy with the results...i removed the riplock earlier too with the initial flash to the A09 firmware, don't think it has been retained, but i would choose the booktype capability anyday personally over the riplock feature http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/210078 good luck
Heh, heh, kivory666, It's very apparent that you don't know me too well (Lol), da ScubaPete tries most everything ~ That's why I bought the BenQ 1625, to try the LightScribe discs - pretty silly, huh ? Thanks for the link, it's late now But before noon tomorrow, I'll be a-flashin' my 109. No reason to not have 3-burners to book type +R media. I currently have a HP 200i (which doesn't do much of anything but Book type +R media, it's lousy for most everything else). I have a Pioneer 107 ~ hack-flashed to burn 4X at 8X, a NEC 1300A which will do book-type and my Pioneer 109, DL, 16X burner to do DL discs. As I said, I'll be "Flashing that Puppy" tomorrow - Again, thanks, Pete
@scubapete well, i am here to try to help when i can, yes, i believe i DO NOT know you too well, but you have a wealth of knowledge and i respect your opinions and your guides. just looking out for others, LONG TIME addicts or newbies, whenever i see something interesting, i let others know~ good luck w/ your flashing...whenever i can help, i will~ good day to you and all the others~
any chance either of you would know if there is a firmware available so i can flash my burner to enable it to booktype +r media? HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GCA-4040N i use my laptop for most burning because it is a p4 2.66 ghz and the desktop is a p3 800 mhz
@jer2911tx - nope, can't find anything except the proverbial RPC1 firmware here - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1997
Hi kivory666, I've flashed my drive with the FW1.57EU, rebooted, N/P. Then went to do the "Quiet drive utility," I installed it, clicked "run", I don't know if it "ran", nothing happened. There was nothing to show it successfully completed its task. (?) Just in case it was doing it's job and there was no "completed" message, I rebooted again and went to the "Buffalo" site and tried to "download" it's program. It says "Run", I clicked that and another box "Popped" up that said something and then said, "OK", before I could click on it, it vanished ~ (?) Qui Pasa ?
@scubapete mind you, you have to flash your dvr-109 to the A09 1st before the buffalo firmware can be done... it is ONLY on the A09 firmware that the quiet drive utility can be utilized...THEN proceed with the aforementioned steps you took and it should be fine~ i THINK that will work, that's how i did it~ don't know if it's possible to go from dvr-109 w/ 1.57fw straight to buffalo 8.57...haven't read anywhere this was done successfully by anyone.
No, no, My bad . . . . The ScubaPete is old but I can read, well too, Lol) I flashed with the A09 first THEN tried the second flash which didn't work as the third didn't as well. The A09 is on there, N/P - Will have a go on ittomorrow - thought there was something "Dodgy" with the hyper-links.
i don't know what to tell you scubapete~ it worked for me without a hitch, i just did it step by step according to the guys over at cdfreaks ~
There was a brief discussion about the Verbatim VideoGuard DVD+R discs earlier. I just wanted to alert anyone interested that Best Buy have them on sale now for $9.79. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...&cpncode=09-2722560&cmp=KA14525&ref=16&loc=01
Thanks papabois, We were just testing them, not buying them in quanity BUT again, thanks. Hi all, ScubaPete has his Pioneer 109 crossed Flashed to allow Bok typing - I was just having trouble with my ISP server and as I said, couldn't get the files to download. All is fine in Whoville tonight. For those interested: 100-disc Verbatim 8X (Generic) Compatible with Sony, HP and Dell +R Supermediastore.com (For those who aren't all that "picky" but still want quality) $28.80 after coupon. 1-day sale, July 25th '05
good to see you got the booktype thing down scubapete, i knew a man of intelligence would get it working after all~ congrats now you can join me and a few others in the booktyping phenomenon with a formerly "non-bitset capable" drive~ i think im going to stop with my Verbatim purchases for awhile after finding out recently that the new "pearl white" 8x are CMC MAGS not worth the money in my own opinion, don't need the added risk.
