Very grateful for help with Nero burn error (hair tearing out territory!)

On using Nero Rom or Express to burn DVD -R (Sony/Verbatim), whilst burns apparently complete successfully (according to Nero), many of the disks are either unplayable or freeze in places. The burn log posted below shows Key Illegal Request. Nero CD-DVD speed transfer test shows "Error- illegal mode for this track, (056400)". Oddly, the problem does not arise with DVD -RWs. I've tried burning at 8, 12 and the max 16 with no difference. Cds burn fine. I've had some problems also using DVD Fab so am not confident it's a Nero specific problem.

PC: Dell Dimension 5100, Burner is an LG distributed by Dell, firmware I've checked is up to date (A105). Windows XP Pro, Nero 7.10.1.0. Same probem arises with Nero 6.6.1.15 which I've also tried. DMA settings are ok.

I've spent ages trying to solve this but nothing so far I've read does. If anyone can interpret the log and provide any suggestions I'd be extremely grateful.

Have you tried setting the speed to 4x?

    Thanks for the replies.

I haven't so far but will try burning at 4 times. Guess it could be that the burner prefers lower speeds which could be why the 4 times -rw disks have no problems.

Firmware: I did find this suggested update (A106/B109) a while back but Dell assured me (twice!) that it relates to a different burner- the LG/HLDS GSA-H21N, also known as the HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-H21N. Mine is the HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GSA-H21 (A105 firmware). The numbering is spookily close but with the scary warnings you get about ensuring the exact correlation when updating firmware....What do you think? In any event I will definitely check with them again because it would be great if that were the issue....

If Dell says it's not the correct firmware, it likely isn't. Firmware generally won't flash unless it matches up with the burner. The "old" days were a different story though when one could achieve some interesting results.

You might also try some +R media. There has been some crappy Verbatim -R media.

I'm definitely rechecking with them tomorrow because having examined the drive, it's a Hitachi - LG Data Storage (joint venture) produced drive- that would explain the HLDS reference! Could be I was misadvised.... Thanks.

    Well....get this:

    - the firmware was out of date,
    - that being as the burner i have was a replacement sent by Dell and presumably when they said I didn't need new firmware it was as they mistakenly thought the replacement they'd sent was an identical for the original faulty one (which presumably was up to date)but in fact they mistakenly sent a different model and burner entirely!
    - worst still, neither the replacement nor the up to date firmware is designed for my system! It's sold with different Dell PCs!
-and if you can believe all that, they are refusing to send me a correct replacement drive! Something I am pursuing!

Anyway, I am very grateful to you laddyboy because your post led to all this being discovered and one way or another I'll get a new burner. Thanks very much.

OK, you're welcome. I don't understand why the updated firmware can't be installed. It doesn't have anything to do with the computer system. It depends only on the burner regardless of the system in which it's installed. Usually, the firmware updater is written to look for a particular burner name string, and if that matches, the flash occurs. I'm guessing the Dell CSRs have been taught to match update packages to systems since that's how Dell has things arranged on its support site.

Nero says you have the 21N model so I think the firmware linked above should work. The Dangerous Bros also have the H21N A106 firmware on their site that's been hacked to be RPC1.

Let me be clear, I did nonetheless update the firmware (played safe, used the update Dell released on their site). But unfortunately I still get the same error....

The recorder details got cropped, pasting it again:

    NT-SPTI used
    Nero Version: 7.10.1.0
    Internal Version: 7, 10, 1, 0

    Recorder: <HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GSA-H21N>Version: B109 - HA 1 TA 0 - 7.10.1.0

The weird thing is the error doesn't arise with RWs (4 speed) but still does with -rs even at 4 speed.....

Just wanted to give the conclusion to this: Dell finally sent a different burner (Philips) and initial testing shows it works fine, no illegal error. PHEW!

Funny thing was they initially sent another Hitachi/LG and that came up with the same illegal disk error. Would seem that my pc did not work with that burner. No idea why that would be really.

    Thanks for the help

That does seem odd. Glad you're back up and burning.

Oh oh, the first day of the new burner and whilst it burned fine, have already have had several sets of drive error messages in Event Viewer: 1) CD Rom has a bad block and 2) error detected during paging operation. This being with new disks which are clean and without scratches. Well hope it'll just be the new drive being sensitive rather than me having been sent a reburbished one with problems (you can see how paranoia has set in!)

Will have to test it fully and see.... Thanks again
