I have this very big and important doubt. I’m in the process of rebuilding my PC (adding new, better parts) But I wish to upgrade more than just hardware. I currently use Windows 2000 and it’s a great OS, no complaints. I am, however, interested in converting to Windows XP. I find XP to be very interesting, not to mention that some hardware won’t work without it as well as some software. In all compared to Windows 2000, XP is more tweakable in everyway. But I have heard to many stories about how bad XP is and how I should avoid it at all cost. I have used XP in my PC and I have not been to happy with it so far. Too many bugs, glitches and the fact that it was not a legal copy (borrowed one for testing) I could not install SP2. All in all I have heard great things about XP that make me wanna go running to the store right now and buy it, but I also have heard many bad things that have kept me from doing so. I would like anyone and everyone’s help to decide whether I should move to XP or not. Give me good enough reasons (if it’s possible) to switch over and not concern myself so much with the down sides of XP. Or maybe there are not that many downsides as their were before. Going by what is said here I will consider to buy XP. I am a firm believer that if a software has a great need to connect to the internet, specially very important ones (like OS’s and Anti-virus programs), that it is better to buy them rather then get a copy from someone else. But that's just me. No insult intended. Thanx in advance.
You really need to decide if you want the hardware/software enough to move on to the next generation OS. I was talking to one of my friends about XP not too long ago and he told me that a Good chunk of XP's glitches comes from the fact that Service pack 2 just gets " bitchy" with certain programs. I have heard however that you can obtain XP without SP2. The way I look at it is that whatever OS is next (I think its called Longhorn) it will work off of what they have out now at least to some degree, so you may as well get acclimated to how XP runs things. I am currently using XP home and I haven't had any problems I can directly pin on the OS. Usually I narrow it down to a different program, but was the programs screwed up by XP? The world may never know.
XP, with SP1, has been by far the best Microsoft OS that I have used. SP2 is an uneeded SP. It is a security enhancement SP, and has been known to do more damage than good. (Speaking of corrupting software, here.) I haven't loaded it and don't see a reason to.
Thanx for the replys fellas. I realized that the copy I have at home of XP Pro does not have SP1 and maybe that's why it doesn't seem to get my attention. I am already getting it and will be working with it to see. I really am tired of this boring limited windows 2000. Don't get me wrong win 2000 is great. best OS I have had, it's just not customizable enough for me. Please keep the replys coming. I can use all the help I can get.
