I have a very large avi file 17.8 gb.
Is there any hope to get this on a vcd or dvd?

Almost no hope whatsoever. I can't imagine why your file is so big. I am not even sure if any software would be able to handle it. You might try segmenting the file using VirtualDub, but as far as VCD goes, no chance. It is very unlikely that what you have got will be watchable when it has been encoded onto VCD, which can only fit 72 minutes or so anyway. You will need to chop/segment the file and then encode using TMPGEnc into chunks that will fit on VCD. As for DVD, if you have a DVD writer, you should be able to fit more on (about 6 times as much)

    Good luck.

    Paul.

    (Anyone else any ideas?)

I do have a dvd writer but have not tried to make a dvd of any kind up to this point. My avi file is 83 minites long. It is my first attempt at making an instructional video. I did put it back on my mini dvd and copyed it to vhs, but a disc would be nice too.
