I have the nec 3540A (I have flashed it with the firmware update too, unless there is a really new version out)...it burned fine in the beginning, about 50 min for analysis and burning. Now it is taking a dreadfully long time just for the freaking analysis...arond 2hrs. The key is that I am using a memorex dvd drive to analyze the dvd not the nec...could the dvd drive be bad? I have checked the dma and it was fine but uninstalled them both just to make sure and still no luck! Please help, backing up my dvds just isn't as much fun when it freaking takes between 2-3 hours....

    Thanks a bunch

Do you have the deep analysis box ticked? I find that adds about 15-20 minutes to your time. Another thing that will add time are teh AEC options. Those will add considerable time to it. Spy/mal/adware will also add time, I recommend Ad-Aware to remove it, it's free and one of the best. When did you last defrag your HD and how full is it?

I have the same drive using the mad dog firmware (hacked) to remove ripguard. If I Rip using DVD Shrink with no AEC or Deep Analysis applied it takes only 7-9 minutes.

    RE: AEC and Deep analysis

My screen si grayed out because I was using an already shrunk movie to show you. AEC is adaptive error compensation. It's on the bottom half of the image, right under "DVD Shrink 3.2 Quality Enhancements. And above that is the Deep Analysis box.

Sorry about the low quality pic, I don't know what happened.

    RE:Hack firmware

LOCO can probably tell you more about than me since I don't have your burner. I'll leave it to him. I will tell you this however, hacking your burner with unofficial firmware will void all warrenty and it may be irreversable if you want to switch back.

Another possibility is that your system has slipped into PIO mode. This will really drag the analyzing and encoding times down. Follow this guide to check and correct if necessary:

If I was at my home computer I could tell you exactly what the website is but I'm not at home...the best I can recall the site is www.michaelboedler.com

This site specializes in NEC firmware and is a trusted site. You can also get the upgrade from rpc1.org. And if you can always flash back to a factory firmware in the future if so desired.

The firmware does several things. It removes riplock to improve ripping times, it allows for bitsetting, and allows for overspeeding the burn(I think), and a few other things.
