Hi Im using a Pinnacle Studio 500-USB to transfer old home movies on VHS to my computer to burn them to DVD and I can get it downloaded to the computer but the voices are a second to two off from what the screen is. Is there anyway to fix this or am I doing something wrong? How do I match them up? Thanks in advance for any help

Open up the files in virtualdub mod , then go to STREAMS > STREAM LIST > right click Intervealing and play around with the "DEALY" using negative and positive numbers till it sounds about right, also make sure to hit full procesing mode under VIDEO and then his save as avi.

    Good Luck

What format are you capturing to? And what program are you using?

I have the same problem with this device. it came with Pinnacle Studio 10, which I've upgraded to 10.5. It has a capture mode, but the audio ends up out of sync after a few minutes. My older VCR doesn't have S-video connector, so I'm using the RCA cables. The video isn't that great either, sort of jittery, but I figure that's because it's analog conversion.

Any suggestions for using Studio 10 or 10.5 would be greatly appreciated.

I was trying to capture to MPEG format, but read that AVI format might work better for my situation. My PC has WINXP SP2, AMD Athlon 2800+ CPU, 2.13Ghz, Sound Blaster Audigy, ATI Radeon 9250 video card, 1GB of RAM, 80GB HDD. I'm also using a VCR (no s-video connector) and the Pinnacle 500-USB connector. What else do you need to know?

I've read these posts and I'm looking for help also. I've also read some of the ads for the software but now I'm more confused then I was before. I've been trying to get this solved for quite some time now but get sidetraced by work, family, etc.; life I guess you could say.
The reason I want to copy these things, especially my family memories, is because we live in the New Orleans, Louisiana area where the hurricanes destroyed a large area in 2005. The area we live in was extremely lucky for the most part. My home did not suffer much damage but several of my children lost everything. Not one of their family videos or DVDs was saved among everything else they had lost. I want to try to avoid this by backing up as much as I possibly can. We have a motor home now, for the purpose of evacuating, so I plan on putting these copies in it so we have them if and when we have to leave.
I know nothing about copying or transferring but what I want to do is copy DVD purchased movies, copy recorded TV movies to DVD, copy my children's wedding video's (some are on DVD) to DVD and copy our old family videos to DVD. Since I know nothing about all of this I need to keep it as simple as possible but I need to start at the beginning. I also need to keep the expense down since we live on my husband's disability income. He has cancer and can no longer work. That's another reason our family memories are so important to preserve. Okay, what device is there to hook up to my computer to transfer the videos to DVD? I have only one external DVD ROM which is both player and recorder. How do I copy with only the one device? I'm running Windows XP SP2.
I've been reading as many posts as I can but that just seems to confuse me more and I end up with more questions then I started with. I'm soooo wanting to learn how to do this but I guess I'm just not cathing on. Please be kind, I'm 62 and all of this is so Greek to me. I use to think I would be able to keep up with the technology but now I know there is no hope. One of my grandsons wanted an MP3 for Christmas so I had to have him go online and print out what he wanted and the sites to get them from. See what I mean?
This 62 year old grandma needs help, please but easy help, if there is such a thing.
    Thanks in advance.

I dl'd VirtualDub, and started trying to capture from my VCR thru the Pinnacle 500-USB device, and the doesn't seem to end up out of sync with the video, but the AVI file it creates is HUGE! I mean, I know this video stuff take a lot of room on the HDD, but this was massive. I only captured the first 20 minutes of the VHS tape, and the AVI file was over 9GB. How is this ever going to be compressed to fit onto a DVD-R?

I only have 19GB left on my HDD (80GB total capacity), but I do have a second drive salvaged from my son's old computer when a new one was purchased, and it's a 120GB, so I'm good that way.

I looked for guides on VirtualDub, but didn't find one that explained the settings in a way I could understand. It was simple enough to use, but maybe I'm missing something.

If the AVI file is converted to MPEG, will it be smaller?

If the AVI file is converted to MPEG, will it be smaller?
Yes, but under virtual dub there should be a tab under video for compression, there choose either the panasonic codec
    http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=Panasonic_DV_Codec
    or HuffYUV
    http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=HuffYUV
Then try capturing and the files will still be big but maybe not THAT big. And ofcourse when it is copnverted to mpeg for dvd, it will be a size that is poportional to the dvd size you are using weather it be normal discs (4gb) or Dual Layered discs(8GB).
You can also set something for the audio compression. but if every program you try to capture with is out of sync any chance that the vhs is at fault not the programs/software/hardware?
GooD Luck, and tell me how it goes..

    As for you [bold]myrealtr[/bold]
It is great that you survied the hurricanes and such so now when it comes to backing up your dvds you will first have to decrypt them. YOu can acomplish this with any decrypting program such as DVD decrypter, DVDfab decrypter, or AnyDVD. Then once it is decrypted you can burn to another dvd. For this you will need a dvd burner and a burning program like nero, but dvdecrypter can burn too so if you can get your hands on it then that would be great too. In the of chance that it is a Dual dlayerd disc than you will have to shrink it to fit on a single layerd disc using an application such as dvd shrink, and then burn it onto a dvd.
As for transfering your VHS tapes you need a capture card, iw uold suggest a hauppauge card or an ATI all in wonder, but any card with S-Video or composite will do. THen you need to capture the material and transfer it to your computer. than it needs to be converted to dvd compliant mpeg and then authored. chack out the guides section of this site for that, and read more threads on this site as there are many on the subject. here is something to get you started

Hope this helps and please take a look around the site for more info on the topic

I didn't say that EVERY program I try is out of sync, just the crappy software (Studio 10) that came with the USB device. I said that the VirtualDub seems to be keeping sync, which is great news, because I thought that maybe I wasted my $$ on this capture device.

Thanks for the tips! I will keep trying.

and hey, [bold]myrealtr[/bold]...I've been to NO twice (before Katrina) and I loved the city. All my prayers go out to you and everyone there. I hope you can rebuild and come back better than ever.

i am very sorry about that Waldooorf, i misread your response, if the sync is in wiht virtual dub then that great, try the codecs i suggested to make it a smaller file and then maybe you can edit and author with pinnacle.

Thans so much. That link to Cnet is a big help. How much easier can it be with the video to show exactly what to do? That's the kind of help I need. Show me how to do it and I will be able to do it myself after that. I'm not too good with written instructions since I'm not up on the verbige and terms. I'm not sure what to do about the equipment since the Pinnacle Systems'Studio MovieBox Deluxe Deluxe, which includes the hardware, doesn't seem to be available. I am following the links to check out other programs but I'd rather have this one since the instructions are for this product. Does anyone know if it's been discontinued? At least now I know what I'm looking for as far as the videos. I appreciate all of your help and advise and will do my best to learn all needed. It might take me a while to be able to afford everything I need to copy the DVD's as well as the videos since it's different software and equipment, as far as I can tell, but I'm hoping I can get it all before we have any storms this year, God forbid.
Also, thanks for the well wishes. New Orleans, LA is where I was born and raised although I did live in other locations due to my husbands 22 year Navy career. This is the place I've always wanted to return to and did 28 years ago when he was transfered back to the local base here. I loved the places we lived while we were there but there's no place like home; especially when you're from this area.
    Thanks so much.

well that cnet thing is pretty old so there is probably newer hardware out, any of their card should do, and its the same program, so shouldnt be hard ot adapt.
As for the dvds if you have a burner all you need is software.
im not telling you to do anything illegal ;) but check out this guide... http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/234097

Just found the Pinnacle Studio Moviebox 9.3 on ebay and won it for $85. This will at least let me do the videos I have to put on DVDs. I think I will need DVD burning software, if I'm not mistaken. At least I think I've bought the right thing. There is a newer one on the Pinnacle site but to get everything including the hardware it would have cost me about $175 if I was reading it correctly. I know the newer one has a not more features for more editing and stuff like that and putting it on portable players like those things the kids are using now, but I really want to get my videos onto DVD's for now to be able to take them with us if we have to evacuate again. It's a lot easier to carry a bunch of DVD's then it is to make room for all of those video tapes. I think I've done the right thing. I guess if I didn't I can always sell it on ebay.
    I appreciate the help.
